i am using a 10inch resin housing and reuseable insert, i put 24ppm in to the resin at 300 litres a day, how long will the resin last keeping the ppm at 000.  should i use a 20inch housing will i get better life out of my resin.

If the water going into the resin is at 24 ppm then you will eat through resin at a fair lick.
How much resin fits in your DI?

A litre of resin was barely lasting me a week before I was forced to change it.

This was cos my R/O had lost its efficiency (my own fault for nor flushing regularly) and was returning a TDS of about 27 ppm.

I use roughly 200l per day, sometimes more, but after a few days the TDS was starting to creep up.

My R/O is now returning water at 0.000 ppm- 0.001ppm after I replaced the membranes.
That was several weeks ago and I haven't needed to change the resin as of yet.

If your R/O is an efficient one it'll be giving you water at about 0.002-0.007 ppm

Resin will last an awful long time then.

But if your TDS is reading 24ppm and there is no way of changing that, then get a larger housing so that you can have several litres of resin in there.

Hi.I've only been doing WFP two weeks now.Just using the resin (25L) no RO at the moment but on its way.430 on TDS into the tank. Not even made 2,000 Litres before the TDS going mad.Would have hoped for a bit longer.

I think you should get yourself an RO very soon, it will work out alot cheaper than using all that resin, at over 400ppm it will do in 25 ltr of resin very quickly.

Gaz , what is your TDS before Merlin ?

Do you remember the experiment i did with my contraption ?

Just finished another one with new resin , at 100 TDS i was getting 1250 L through the van mount ...... well i just got 4000 L through the device !

Rich

You can expect to get around a 90% reduction from the Merlin. Maybe slightly better if pumped. You should be left with around 9 or 10 tds.

Cheers Andrew , i will have to do my sums over the weekend to see if its worth me splashing out , im on a meter you see , but at the moment im getting about 16000 L of pure from 1 bag of resin .
If you do your sums you will see that i should only be getting 5000 L a bag at my TDS of 100 !
 They call me Proffesor D i c k  in these parts !

Hi again Mr Proff   :)

Here's what my costing on a meter up here would be with your magic contraption if I had an input of 100 TDS

£6.20 per 1000 at present with just the DI

£2.90 per 1000 at 10 tds through the Merlin including waste at 1 to 1 ratio of waste to RO output to DI

So a saving of £3.30 per 1000 ltrs.

In my case at a usual daily usage of 500 ltrs it would take me 200 working days or so to justify the Merlin.

Personally I would go for a 2 or 300 GPD RO MAN unit though because I get my TDS down from 415 to 9 or 10. So you should get yours down to 3 or 4.

Of course it depends on how much and how quickly you want to be able to produce water.

Actually if I were you I wouldnt bother with a RO bearing in mind how much each 1000 ltrs can make you but one would pay for itself well within a year. PS havent included the price of replacement membranes coz I cant be bothered  ::)

Sorry Rich  didnt make it clear I think.

The Ro's that I know about produce waste water as they work. So you get one oulet for Ro'd water and one that goes to waste. From what I know and see posted its about average to get as much ( if not slightly more) waste water than Ro'd stuff. Depends a lot on water pressure etc as to how low that figure will be.

I measured mine on my RO MAN 200 gpd unit which works at marginal pressure.. just on the too low to good mark at around 50 PSI and I get a 1 to 1 ratio of waste water to the good stuff.

Hope that clears it up mate.

Andrew
