carrying water
« on: November 17, 2005, 10:35:20 am »
HI all,   Ive purchased a 1000 litre valet tank to carryu the purified water in. This morning (first time) i filled it a third of the way as payload on van is only 1 ton and the force of the water was rocking me back and forth.  This made me feel very unsafe about driving like this, how do you all carry your water and is there a better method.

I carry my water in 25 ltr containers  ( But then I would wouldn't I )  ;D

Best thing to do is always to ask here before buying something like a tank. THat one you have is only usefull as a static one unless you baffle it out. Someone here.. and I can't remember who has a good way of doing it using something like guttering downpipe.

Cheers

Hi David

For the baffles to work they should run perpendicular to the direction of travel.
Hence car goes forward bafles go from one side of van to tuther
Does that make sense

Yes it does make sense i thought it was more important to baffle the side to side movement

If you use cut down drain pipe as baffles, they should run top to bottom. When you look down the filler hole it would look like a honey comb. This would baffle any movement of water in any direction. DAI

You need to baffle in both directions.

Baffling side to side will stop the water surging when braking or accelerating, but will do no good for cornering.  Likewise, baffling front to back will help with cornering, but not braking.

Both effects are just as dangerous and will lead to instability or vastly increased stopping distances.  This can constitute an unsafely loaded vehicle, and if the cops see your van swaying around the road they will certainly pull you over.  Worst case scenario is a £5,000 fine.

As Dai said, use lengths of downpipe sawn and jammed into the tank vertically.  You should pack in lengths of pipe until there is no room for any more.  This will effectively baffle in all directions and will prevent surging very well.

Note: a pre-pump filter is very important as there will undoubtedly be swarf in the tank from the baffles, and this will clog the pump.
