RUBBER !!
« on: October 27, 2011, 12:22:03 pm »
Just been given the go ahead to clean a car showroom carpet ( Carpet tiles).

There appears to be black marks all over the place.
I think it could be rubber off the tyres from the new cars or tyre slick.
Dont think its oil or it shouldnt be as they're new cars !

Anyone tackled this before ? And if so whats the best product to remove such marks ?

It was the 1st question the showroom manager asked...do you think these marks will come out ?

Any advice would be appreciated,
Cheers

It could also be from the exhausts where the cars have been running in the showroom. It's unlikely to be rubber, unless they've been wheelspinning the new motors in the showroom (as an ex car salesman, I wouldn't rule this out..).

More likely to be, as you mentioned, tyre blackener which valeters have used. I'm not sure whats in these products though.

As for being oil, it's not impossible that one of the fitters let a bit dribble onto manifold etc while they were doing the PDI, not necessarily an oil leak.

It could easily be grease dripped off grease nipples on new cars .

We've done a car showroom that had the marks you describe, turned out to be tyre black. Because the tiles were bitumin backed I had to be careful using solvent, but a light wipe with (Altec) chewing gum remover got it up then cleaned using hwe.

I'd do a couple of test marks before you start on the job proper. Then if they won't budge you won't be in that embarrasing place of asking to be paid yet the problem that the owner principly called you in for still hasn't been removed.

Trim dressing used to blacken tyre walls etc is usually silicone isn't it?  Like roger says, I'd do a little bit of a test clean first to determine what sort of outcome you're likely to get, and also will help you to quote accordingly.

Thee stuff you buy from halfords in a can is silicone, but I think the pro stuff is different (it's normally painted on instead of sprayed).

It may still be silicone though?

Could just be muck picked up from the outside courtyard when the drove the vehicle in.

Or perhaps it was raining outside so the cars were wet and just dripped when driven inside
