Thanks for the info Paul, it does make you ponder a bit though when I look at google the adverts and maps take up so much of the screen that even a top free placement takes a bit of scrolling to get to.

But maybe use something like this http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php

I used that for my area, so how come www.basingstokecarpetcleaners.co.uk comes up with a pr of zero yet is top of the natural listings?

So which cleaner has the highest PR? what are your sites showing?

I did do some playing and the NCCA had the highest, facebook got 10/10 which you would expect, ebay only got 6/10.

Hi Guys

Over the years it has become more and more evident that the url name is more important than anything else.

This was my main suggestion at the CCDO, last but one.

Marks site is top of Halifax because it has enough fire power, it doesn't have to be PR 5 plus a very strong name.

Cheers

Doug have you not heard that Google will be giving far less weight to domain name in the not too distant future?

It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Is that actual page rank or toolbar page rank we are talking about?

Wynne

There has been talk of that for years but the reality is that domains names containg key words are much easier to rank highly and probably always will be.

The single, most important factor in ranking is........ RESOURCES.

Actually Doug,

I've put up sixteen small sites this week and everyone has a keyword in the URL.  :)

Yes,

As long as it is not the only weapon in the armoury.

As Wynne said, Google has declared war on exact match domains but we are yet to see massive differences.

I did however have an exact match one drop from 2 down to 9 following the Oct 13th re alignment. It's cost me some dosh!

I'm still doing this for local search and I'm also telling people to have a company name domain name which is something I used to say was a waste of time unless someone already knew you. But now that google seem to think brands are one way to sort out the crap it's probably a good way to hedge your bets for the future.

Also remember google want you to spend money, things like removing keyword data from analytics, ever expanding paid search blocks etc mean one day all your traffic may dry up unless you get your wallet out, so always have multiple ways to get traffic, just like you should for marketing leads.

What do you reckon Wynne, two separate domains (keyword and company name)?

Hi Guys

If you have a recognisable company name it must be worth having a domain name with it in.

I have always thought you should have as wide as exposure as possible so that changes which are out of your control are not too damaging.

In my view exact name domains are here to stay, although they may lessen in significance.

Yep

And mobile may also make keywords with location in them far less useful. But you can only really do waht works now with an eye on what may or may not happen.

And the bit about analytics, you've probably done it but make sure all the keyword data you have collected is saved to a spreadsheet. It may disappear soon!
