Had a call last night from a good customer who has a small hallway of Karndean flooring,shes had the hall decorated and wants the floor cleaned.She's asked me if i could do it.

Ive never done hard floors ect before only carpets and Uphstry.I only have HWE gear but could borrow a rotoray from a friend.

Is this something I could do or is it a job for an experienced op.I dont believe in doing things without training but have no idea whether cleaning this stuff is easy or difficult.

She says shes done it herself in the past on her hands and knees but it knackered her up - shes in her 70's

At the end of the day it's only vinyl.
Would imagine a good wet mop with diluted
microsplitter, dwell, gentle scrub and dwell
again.
Take up the excess with the wand and then
wet mop with warm water take up excess then
mop with warm water to a dry state.

Discuss with client finish/non slip polish required glooss or matt

1, Vacuum
2, Apply stripper with a mop dwell for 5-10 minutes don't let it dry
3, Agitate with rotary green pad, extract slurry
4, rinse floor to return to a neutral ph dry floor.
5, Apply thin coat of polish say north to south wait 30 minutes then go east to west with second coat.

Advise customer to maintain with a neutral maintainer/ cleaner

As above but protect the skirts or items that directly on the floor or the stripper may cause you some not needed probs .

Just done a Karndean 18.57 m2 took 25 pics of the different stages and wrote out a method statement.

just in case you were thinking. It will scratch it. get a hard floor wand or squeegee.

Very easy to clean, you shouldn't need a stripper unless you can see a polish residue on it. Just work in sections mop down something like Citraclean, rotary scrub, aquavac and mop area with water. One word of warning make sure substrate is concrete and not wood, if its not don't work in too big an area, I've seen this stuff move and lift and it aint pretty!

Hi if you look on the Karndean website it has the instructions of how to maintain. I have used Karndeans own striper with a green pad on a pole for a small area (Quite dirty kitchen) and it was simple. Would recomend using karndeans own polish called dimglow it works well and gives the correct finish. All the best with thie job, give it a go, you cant go wrong. Dont bother with rotarys on a small area its not worth the effort of bringing it in and pluging it in.

Bear in mind that Karndean, although much cheaper than Amtico, still costs many times more per square metre than a typical carpet

we have Karndean in kitchen and dining room, was in house when i bought it,
Bloody hate it, its black oblong tile pattern with silver grout lines.
Scratches easily where little fellas high chair is.

To clean it i just use an oreck, with a soft pad on, does come up really well,
will replace it probably next year

I would still bloody hate the look of it, scratches arnt that bad.
Little one thinks he's superman, pick high chair up and throws it accross room,
would give him back of my hand, but he has childlines number, he is only 17 month old

I take it you know how to use a rotary machine? If not stay clear, it will have you bouncing of the walls not only that if you stay on one place to long you'll burn the floor then spend half the night in a&e.

I cant see how "giving what Karndean recommend a go, using Karndean products" can cause any problems?

The stripper is underpowered, if the customer has put lots of coats of finish on the floor already it wont shift it. Not even if applied neat. Its expensive too.

The dim glow is a very soft, low solids product that doesnt have great wear resistance.

Its available to the public so could be seen as turning up to clean their carpets with a rug doctor.

If you want to stay within the warranty but offer a better finish for the customer use Dr.Schutz Hard Sealers.

Yes i agree to a point however i did find Karndeans products more than adequate for the small area I cleaned. The customer was also impressed that I took the time to research, then use the recommended products to maintain their warranty.

But in reply to Jim where is the risk?

There is a risk to every thing but unless you take that small risk sometimes you never do anything.
