« on: October 19, 2011, 10:57:36 am »
Hi all, I have been offered work carrying out needle sweeps on void property's. I have booked up some training and was wondering whether anyone could help me out with any relevant paperwork i.e Risk assesment/ Method statement , job completion forms etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated  :)
Cheers

I "trained" with the NACSC but I could show you in about 20 mins. Have you got a waste licence ? You should really have hep jabs. You need needle gloves, bins and a sanitizing fluid but I use pliars rather than litter tongs to pick

Hi, thanks for reply  :) yes I have waste carriers licence and am about to finish Hep B course. I have ordered gloves bins etc but was really looking for any advice on any relevant paperwork to be completed. Also I've heard of the light switch booby traps but was wondering whether there was any other areas to be aware of.

Cheers

Yes loads - every site will be different. I use a mirror to look over doors, inside cupboards, ovens, gas fires, behind baths, sinks and everywhere else you could hide sharps. I have found them in cushions so if you had sat on the sofa you'd have a shock so I now regularly break sofas into pieces. I've found needles in a baby bottle steriliser so you need to look everywhere. Spray the sharp with sanitiser, put one hand in your pocket and then pick the sharp with your pliars or tongs and place into the bin which is on the floor. that other hand cannot be stabbed if its in your pocket. What paperwork are you after ? you need the waste licence, ra and ms. If you ticked waste broker you can store the sharp bins until they are full - in a safe place

Hi Carl, thanks for all the info  :)  I was looking for RA/MS templates and was wondering whether to provide some sort of paperwork upon completion of the job such as something saying that area has been swept, list of anything found etc.

I make every effort to find everything but will not provide a certifcate that states its clear - I have been asked several times to do so. I give them a statement saying whats been done and what was found where with photos. With regard to rams you really need them to be site specific and done properly - for your own safety. Include everything you can find out - the addicts habit, why they left, needle exchange and never take anything for granted. I do sweeps on my terms or not at all. I was doing a drain survey at poole railway station and had to remove a false ceiling tile and had loads of needles fall down which could have hit me in the face . Surely someone else can contribute

Hi

Yeah you do get the light switch booby trap, also underneath bannister rails pointing upwads.

As has been said, they hide them in all sorts of places, any 'dead air space' such as behind baths, tops of kitchen units, behind the sink unit, underneath where the pipes are, in sofas, under them and chairs, in bags, bottles, drawers, wardrobes, discarded clothes, under beds, drawers, wardrobes.

Did a Hep C one (no cure for Hep C) and even though I did 2 thorough sweeps I still came across them as clothes were all over the floor in the bedroom and lounge and they were hidden inside the clothes. Never clean anything out of eye sight (upper kitchen units)

As said each site is unique and any MS/RA will need to be site specific and agree with the cannot gaurentee comlete removal as if by chance you do miss one, then it's your reputation and no one is perfect.
