How do I clean the sill with wpf?
« on: November 04, 2005, 06:00:26 pm »

Could anyone help me out?

As a seasoned traditional window cleaner eager to change to wfp, I am not sure how well I will be leaving the windowsills.

As I clean each day comparing in my mind the difference wfp will make, I found myself PUSHING hard on my sill cloth   (horizontal surface, months worth of thick dust bird poo)   to get the nice finish I WANT & what my customers expect.

So how will I be able to make sure that to some degree I will get the results I will want?

I have been telling them how great the frames are going to be, but I don’t want to have to compromise too much with the sills.

I am sure there are many conscientious wfp’s who do a good job, SO

CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME HINTS?

Any & all points made will be gratefully received.

I just use the brush to go along the cills a couple of times. Downstairs however, I often use a piece of old towel when I've finished that particular side of the house.

(I find the wfp brush often brings out grit and muck from the join between the frame and the cill on patio and porch doors and nearly always use the towel instead.)
It's a game of three halves!

if sills are discoloured due to build up of dirt, this is more than customer expects from window cleaner. This is UPVC cleaning for which I charge £5 per sill to bring back to original white...THEN on future cleans, I wipe across with brush head and this is as good as wiping with cloth.

If you are cleaning your regular accounts, you will already have got the sills clean, the water flow from your brush, coupled with a quick wipe is usually more than enough to keep them clean.
And depending on the angle you have your brush set at (I use the Unger setup and its completely adjustable) even on upstairs windows you can still wash the sills.

On some downstairs windows, as has been said, muck can gatehr in the gap between the frame and the sill and you keep flush the bloody stuff out! >:(

On some I have spent extra time, kept the water flowing and used a bit of stick to run back and forth in t he groove so that I can flush out the crap.
On subsequent cleans it makes a big difference.
Not so effective on patio doors though as the sill is at ground level :'( and the groove is always getting filled up with detrius!
Sometimes I'll just use the flat of my hand to run over the sill, that works too.
