Recession ?
« on: November 02, 2005, 08:33:29 am »
Its everywhere - we are heading for a recession, bad weather, 3 day working weeks etc.

Well my question is to those guys who went through the last one in 1992
.

Q: Did it affect your takings and at what stage did it happen ?

My thoughts are that unless peoples income is reduced then our industry wont be affected for residential.  So

Q:  When the 3 day working week happended how many cancellations did you get ?

Commercial - here we go.  I work in Sales and already see businesses trying to cut back on spendig.  There have been 4 company closures in the past 2 weeks in my Town alone. Given this is supposed to get worse in the coming months..

Q:  Are any of you getting an indication this might affect your commercial soon and how quickly were you affected last time ?

Regards,

Sarah

Sarah,
The 3 day week was so long ago I can't even remember it!
I've been going coming up 22 years in December, recessions come and go, it has so far never really had much of an effect on me.
I have recently lost the account of the only department store in Chepstow :-\ Purely as a result of poor high street trade, and their (as you said in your post) cutting back on every expense they can think of.
If the winter is as bad as the doomsayers are trying to tell us, maybe there will be power cuts, maybe there won't too!
The beauty of window cleaning is that all our eggs are spread over hundreds of baskets!!
You may well lose a handful of accounts, but it shouldn't be enough to force you into part time work!!
If we have a winter as severe as, say, the one in 63, with a couple of feet of permafrost...now THAT will affect us!!

I'm supposed to be elsewhere getting a price on signwriting ;D

I'm outta here!

well i was a carpenter at the time

the building game was hit VERY hard, i was a apprentise at the time, and the company was down to its bare bones at the end,

havent the "experts" been on about "its happening this year" for the last 3 years :(

lets hope its not as bad as they predict, though they do seem to run in 10 year cycles, thus we are due the next

Hi sarah,

Yep, I have been w/cleaning since 1980.

1992 had no affect on me at all.

I do mainly domestic, nearly all my customers have good jobs and I clean in a lot of diffrent areas, If things get bad I may lose an odd customer, but I can't keep up with my round in winter anyway.

If its a nasty cold winter, thats a diffrent story alltogether, And I've been expecting one since 1980, I do split my working year into two halfs.Make as much as I can in summer and try to survive the winter. So my expections are far lower in winter,I'm on my 5th weeks work of winter and I'm still averageing a summers wage.

I'm fortuanate to have some money behind me,because we should all save for a rainey day. My wifes hoping this winter is going to be a real stinker as she wants me to redecorate the house.

Though I would rather go to the canniers for a month to get some sun on my bones.

Just stay happy.Nel

I remember the last recession, it was grim up north so I went to Germany for a couple of years.

Ian has got it about right. There are always ups and downs but the real beauty of this business is that you are like a cork, you can just bob up and down with them.

If you had a shop and still had to pay the rent ,rates etc then you would be justified in worrying. Friends of mine have a garage and have to take five grand a week just to cover the overheads.

If its too cold to work, stay indoors or look for a cheap flight to Florida. People like us are the lucky ones.
