I went to a customers house and all along the edges of the carpet are strange white marks (see photograph). It looks like sun damage but because of the positioning of the marks this cannot be the case as most affected areas are not in direct sunlight. She says no cleaning products have been used on the areas. The marks are on the edges of the carpet only. Upstairs and downstairs. Any idea guys?

Either some clumsy clod spraying a bleach around or uv damage.
Neither of which can be rectified by a carpet cleaner

Would need to see more pictures but it looks to me as though that is how the carpet should have looked when new and the area in the middle is worn did they have it laid

I would say perhaps shading or as before UV. Reds are affected by light bleaching quite easily....however it's not your problem.

Not something I would loose sleep about nor be going to the effort of taking pics.

If you enlarge it looks like decorator damage there are what look like white paint chips on the carpet . Maybe someone's been overzealous on paint removal / preparation and made a mess when attempting to clean up their mess.  I'd be asking questions  

Looking again at this ................

The affected area is on the turn and at the skirting edge going down the stairs. Although the appearance IS consistant with UV light effect, the pattern does not support that theory and being NOT close to the edge. but extending outwards for some 8 - 15 inches, gives me the impression that something has been probably sprayed onto the paintwork or metal rails and ended up on the carpet then attempts have been made to remove it.

Agree it looks like uv damage but he says in his post worst areas are not in sunlight

No its not UV as if that was the case why is it only the edges are effected? Most areas are not effected by direct sunlight. I like the decorator theory. Ill email her and ask if that could be possible.

Bear in mind ...............the damage has probably been caused by herself or husband and the will deny it 'till the coos come home.

Hi Guys

I think this is caused by air containing contaminants , probably soot which are 'bleaching' the carpet.

It is happening in the highest airflow area on this picture.

Cannot be directly caused by a human as it is too even.

As Doug says but fumes from gas cooker.  In the worn areas the pile is compacted and thus has a denser colour. Also the pile isnt open to the airflow as much. People don't realise the amount of gasses which come from gas cookers and ovens. It is quite substantial and I have seen curtains literally fall apart in the folds due to fume degradation.

I've seen this problem a few times - its down to flux modulation and virtual inductance.  This is caused by the thermal capacity of the fibre and linear alignment to the utility fusion within the house (eletrical junction/fuse box)  The field flow of the electrical charges causes amplitude reduction throughout various areas of the house.  This causes flux distortion and opaque refraction, hence the lighter marks you see in the photo.  In short, its fooked!

Hi,

To me this is just simply wear and tear of the nylon carpet in the walkways. The edging (where it's different) is what the carpet originally looked like. You can clearly see where you walk the evidence of lost colour, pile crush etc. I've seen loads of nylons go like this it's simply old age.

Huh ?  Was any of that for real , lol     might distort your hifi speakers perhaps but the carpet ! ?

Put some ms in the hifi speakers that should sort it out. If it does nt it will at least get rid of their ear wax.
