Yellow Pages Yell.com etc
« on: October 05, 2011, 03:49:03 pm »
Just arranged to see my Yellow Pages Rep next week. Having checked my numbers planning to put only a small ad in the book and not use anything else, the internet works much better for us. But wondered what tactics the reps are using this year, caught us last year with what appeared to be a good offer with a package deal but didn't turn out that way, wondered are they dropping their prices at all.

Kind Regards

Eddie

YP etc are becoming redundant. A customer said to me yesterday that they don't even take the wrapping off and just dump it.

At the rate they are going on, it will be the size of one of those tiny bibles....about an inch. Not their fualt as tinternet is a much better shop window.

Hi Eddie
i tooo am bewildered at what to do with yell in the coming year, as you know i've had th eno1 slot on yell.com for 2 years but they tried to put the already inflated price up by 20% so i cancelled it. it's brought a few jobs in but it's not a very good return on 2 grand for the year.
The book i hear you ask?  well older folks use the book, and as you know when they get older their eyesight starts to deteriorate and as the y/p book is getting smaller each year i don't think they'll be able to see our adverts, let alone read them.
May  i recommend you do the same as me and just flip a coin.

regards

Dave

Hi i get calls off these guys regularly asking to go in the book to be honest who uses it these days if i want a carpet cleaner i type in google carpet cleaner i dont type into google yell.com then on yell.com carpet cleaner , they are a useless piece of advertising and they know it ,have you seen the book lately its getting thinner.

also they say 32000 people searched for a carpet cleaner you missed out you could have been chosen , ask them this question how many cleaners do you have on the books ? do you tell each the same sentence the rep i spoke to soon stopped with the bullpoop i told him all customers are the same , a name and number and no matter what you do its the person reading that picks so save your £500 or whatever a year it is same with thompson local

i set up the free advert in yell and i think thompson too didnt get one call plus they spelled my company name wrong oh well might print it right in next years book thank god i didnt pay.

This is my first year in the business so I went for a small ad in the book and online - £413 all in. Will see what happens.

The last couple of years has seen a very poor return for us, next year we'll be doing nothing with them, I personally don't buy into the sentiment 'well, the more who pull out, the more work for us', basically I believe yp & yell is dead in the water.

YP and Yell still working well for me.

I have a 1/6 page colour ad giving me a return of over 400% from NEW  business alone in last 12 months.

Could be I'm just lucky but I think I'll stick with it a little longer.

If Yell is dead then what's left? I mean except internet advertising.

I've just been offered a nice little deal. Colour advert and all the trimmings for just over £400... I'm quite tempted.... :-\

he said 7 year ago shares in yp where £7 each, now they are 3p each  :o

If Yell is dead then what's left? I mean except internet advertising.

I too have ceased advertising all 3 of my businesses in yellow pages and Yell, which as you can imagine cost me a tidy sum :'(.

I have decided to spend the money saved on internet advertising as it gets a far better response ;D.

Another method I intend giving a try with the money saved is Leafleting and Canvassing.  You can target just the type of homes you prefer to deal with the door to door approach, and the same can be said for the businesses called upon in your area.

The main thing is that you remain Pro-Active.
