Merlin RO - is it any good?
« on: October 02, 2011, 12:17:31 pm »
I've ordered one because I live in a flat and I can't have a static system in the van due to other work I sometimes do.

Several window cleaners I've spoken to have separately said a merlin system won't produce zero TDS as you need resin for the final filter and you can't add one to a merlin RO system.

I phoned the company and they said I won't need a resin bed but wouldn't commit themselves as to exactly what the TDS will be.

Now I don't know whether to cancel the order or not, and anyway, I don't know what else I could use to make pure water in a flat.

Anyone got any ideas? Thank in advance for any replies.

Cheers

Merlins do produce a reasonable amount of water, but their efficiency is not very good.
So they produce lots of waste (expensive if you are on a meter) with a efficiency of about 90%. A local fellow w/c has just replaced his and with softish water (90ppm) his pure is 10ppm. So he still needs to put it through a di for final polishing off to 0ppm.

Other Roman type R/O's do produce water slower but with an efficiency of between 97 - 99% using American sourced membranes. The Korean/Chinese copies are cheaper but not as efficient.

If we want 0ppm then we all use resin, but obviously, the higher the TDS is, the more resin you will use over a period of time. Your resin di vessel will be after your Merlin and a seperate item.

Hi -  I've had a Merlin for over 2 years and it's been excellent - depending on your tap TDS & water pressure
will determine what TDS comes out of the Merlin.
you really need a booster pump to make the very best of it.

if your water TDS is 300 ish and mains pressure at 30 PSI ( as mine is ) you would get around 18 TDS out  when fitted with a booster pump it dropped to 8 and produced 100 ltrs per hour.

you wont need the post filter  just plumb in a di vessle to polish off to zero tds
