Do I need HF?
« on: September 14, 2011, 09:37:46 pm »
Currently working on a sandstone floor installation that has been abused by builders.
Worst I have seen (and I have seen many)

We have managed to remove everything but mortar/cement spots from the tiles.

Is Hydrofluoric the only answer to this?

We have tried Hydrochloric, Phosphoric & Nitric (qualifying possible damage with customer) these wont shift it.

Anyone any experience of this? Can you recommend a supplier? We only have 10% stuff which aint touching it.

Blast Away

Mike Taybur in Bury sells 58% HF, £100 for 30 liters. Never tried it on mortar/cement though so can't help there. Only use it on accy brick etc and stone walls for carbon etc. Maybe it would be too harsh for tiles and etch them.

You get a lot of use out of it mate as it's really strong so dilute properly. I've turned brick purple mis-using it. I add in a splash of degreaser for the surfactants to let it sit on and wash off within 20-30 seconds.

Turned bricks purple??!!

We used to get 60 something percent stuff in London an I mixed it by eye. Tried all kinds of mixes and only had probs on stone. Cheers for the tip though as I've never used his stuff. 30l will last me ages, don't use much but it's always good to have.
