I think the £215 Tosh was on about was for the shurlo backpack.

And yes... you will be blasting away Gaz. I can spray the windows on the houses on the other side of most roads with my 100PSI  ;D ( err pump that is )

To control that beast and conserve water etc a very good investment is a Varistream MK2.. also from Williamsons.

I don't wanna sound like a bearer of doom Gaz but now with 100 PSI if you restrict your flow much you will probably burn out your pressure switch on your pump pretty quick.

Watch out for the pump swithching itself off and on again rapidly. If this happens and you dont get a Varistream .. oh well  :(

Andrew can you explain more about restricting my water flow?

No prob Gaz.

The pump has a pressure switch on it. What it does is switch the pump off if the pressure in the hose/line etc exceeds it's rated max. So.. it's pumping away at 100 PSI and that can shift some water!!. So.. you restrict the plow to preserve your water. You then get back pressure which the pressure swith senses so it swithes the pump off. Then of course as the pressure decreases as your water flows out it senses this and switches the pump back on. This is called Cycling and can happen up to 100 times per minute. The switch ( and pump ) aren't designed to handle this and so.. something gives. Someone posted on here a little while back that he was going through a pump every month or two.

In fact..  theres an expanation on the Pure Freedom website. Have a look mate.

Hope this helps Gaz.

Thanks Andrew for that, are you saying that this applies to all pumps or to just the higher psi pumps? only ive been using a 40 psi shurflo for nearly 5 months with no problem to it`s performance until i use my longer pole then it struggles hence the reason for a higher psi,Gaz.

Well Gaz I suppose it applies to all pumps with a pressure switch but it will become more of a problem as you go up in PSI as you are more likely to cut the flow to a point where it causes cycling.

Another great thing about the Varistream is that you maintain pressure at low flow rates so you still get a decent jet for that all important rinsing. ( Seen posts to say rinsing isnt needed..  tried it on my place a few times..  yes it is needed)

Have to agree, I would suggest for the extra few £ ring Williamson and see if they still do the pump and flow as a package and see if they would add it to your order...

Have always used a 100psi went two years controling the water flow via controle valve at pole end had no problems (must have been lucky) next pump lasted 4 months before pressure switch went, then went over to Williamson,
The neetr thing about the vari streem is that it not only gives you greater controle over your water flow by ajusting the amto the pump but it seems to let the batterie last longer (ie I use 110amp hr charged up over the weekend lasts all week)
The only thing that I could not get right was that Williamsons tel you to bypass the pressure switch, (Idid this and the hose connections kept popping)I leave the pump turned on and shut then water off by controle valve at the pole (even ajusted the regulater inside the veri streem box) so in the end I reconected the pressure switch and it works fine best investment since the pole (pluse with that kind of controle on flow water seems to last longer(and I really give a good soaking to rinse))

why the need for a 100psi pump?waste more water?because it cant be for impacted soilage because a 40psi pump will still do the same job.If your using resin it will definately run out quicker.I have a 60psi pump on eceh reel.A varistream takes it down to under 30psi and i can get more work out of a 700ltr tank than before as the water is now restricted through the varistream and not the pole lever. Also my highest building is 76feet and i still dont need to increase the varistream.

If you have equipment with a set rating and you only use a % of that rating then you are not using that equipment to the max there fore that equipment never has to labour to achive your needs, this meens that if you ever need that extra it is there and because it never works flat out it should have a better work life..

A little off topic, sorry!

Andrew,

It is a slight misnomer to say that rinsing isn't needed, you still rinse, you are simply resting the tips of the bristles on the glass.
Don't forget, it is a continuous rinsing process all the time with WFP.
From what you are saying, you use the needle jet in your brush, I use the fan type jet, this gives a full spread of water over the full width of the brush head, and it does make rinsing easier, but it doesn't make a lot of difference, it really depends on your technique.

Back on topic now!

My own pump is the 60 psi Shurflo. I've been using it for over 18 months, I continually stop my flow by kinking my pole hose (painful if you're not used to it :o)
At times the pump stutters like Arkwright in Open All Hours.

Not a problem in all that time.

Why?

Well my setup is from Peter Fogwill at Broxburn Cleaning Products, and Peter sets up his pump box with a flow restrictor lever, as you restrict the flow the pump is plumbed up so the the water is recycled continuously.

Works a treat ;)

I can have my water either blasting out or at a trickle, I can kink my hose, tie knots in it (I do this when I am changing a barrell or having to negociate something awkward and I'm to far from the car to turn off the pump, or when I need to clean a door trad style and so on.)

But the variflo sound a top piece of kit, and certainly does the job of protecting your pump!

Ian

Hi Ian

Yes the recycling method does work. We tried it out on one of our prototypes and it did seem to minimise stuttering/cycling but went for the Varistream because it does far more than that. It gives you very accurate flow control, saves on battery drain and another excellent feature is that it acts as a very reliable on/off remote control because if you fit a simple on/off flow valve inline you can stop your water flow and it will sense this and stop the pump for you. Open your valve up again and you have instant flow again at the flow rate you had set.

As to jets. I am picking up some fan type ones later this week to try them out as I can see that they could well make rinsing faster. One of the great things about these forums is that you can learn from others experience.

Oh and Ian.. please be carefull with all that kinking your hose... tying it in knots etc. Me poor eyes are watering at the very thought of it  ;D

Cheers

Andrew
