Employee paid £8 per hour
« on: August 21, 2011, 01:06:05 pm »
I need some help for a couple of days next week and have been asking around for some help from some actor friends of mine. As a lot of actors tend to be out of work between shows/productions I really thought I would have no problem getting someone for £8 per hour but so far nobody has put themselves forward!
Is £8 too low? I cant say actors are lazy (as Im one myself!!) as we do work hard for little pay unless we hit the bigtime but I just want to run the pay past you guys.

£8 an hour for someone who would otherwise be doing nothing is good. Especially seen as though min wage is below £6 an hour
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

Are you paying them as a sub contractor or 'cash in hand' ?

while £8.00 is not a bad rate it's not particularly good for an ad hoc 1 day here and another day there esp.
if you then have to pay your tax and expenses out of it.

£8 not bad when i was struggling was being offered £6 when times are hard youll take almost anything but if being paid and having to take out deductions there a fine line between working or being better off on the benefits system
saying that i think anyone working should be taking at least £100 / day just to live a reasonable life
buy running a business means its whats in your pocket at the end of the day

Thanks for all the help guys. Looks like £8 is about right. I have 3 blokes came back to me that wanted to do it but cant due to other work/family commitments but have asked me to let them know next time I need some help. They were all very pleased with the £8 per hour. I think it is just bad timing this time round!

behind the times mate, min wage is above £6 now

I think you might be ahead of the times. The following is from the HMRC website

•for workers aged 21 years or more: £5.93 per hour
•for workers aged 18 to 20 inclusive: £4.92 per hour
•for workers aged under 18 (but above compulsory school age): £3.64 per hour
•for apprentices aged under 19: £2.50 per hour
•for apprentices aged 19 and over, but in the first year of their apprenticeship: £2.50 per hour
