That hurts!
« on: August 11, 2011, 06:19:18 pm »
Had a great week on the gutters this week. Phone call, appointment, quote and do the job on the spot, get paid. My kind of work.

Last job booked at lunchtime today. 20 metres 2 storey guttering and 20 meters 1 storey, to be cleaned inside and out (white PVC). I quoted him £120 (£4/m for the high and £2/m for the low) and was almost off to the van to get my doings when he said he'd had another quote - for £55. OK. Well, I'll match it and do it for £110 then, I said. No he said. £55 for the whole job, inside and out!

I then asked him why he hadn't phoned me to tell me he'd had a quote he was happy with and he said (you've guessed) "I was waiting to see if you'd be cheaper."

No, I certainly won't, but hacked off that a good week didn't have a good end (I'm off to Skegness tomorrow for the day). Why do people take on a job like that for £55? I'd rather work on the tills at Poundstretcher.

Oh well ....

You've lost a job to a cheaper cleaner; end of story. Move on and enjoy your break; not worth getting annoyed over; though a phone call from the customer might have been nice; common courtesy :o

Cheaper cleaner yes. But less than half my price. Am I a thief? I feel like one.

Jed I, most jobs are £40 round here but this was a very large 4 bed detached. Usually £60 and he also wants his filthy  white PVC bringing up like new which is another £60 quid (if you have it done by Dick Turpin here, i.e me)

Mark 311. I'm guessing I've missed yet another murder in Skegness  ??? Had a girl who used to work for me who lived in Belper and we were always commenting on the disproportionately high number of murders in Belper - it was almost one a month at one stage.  Nearby was scene to another nasty happening involving the 'Bakewell Tart'. Reminds me of the old joke. Ronnie and Reggie are invited in by an old lady who gives them a cup of tea to thank them for all their kindness over the years. Reggie says "This is nice. A lovely old lady who respects us so much that she brings us in for a cuppa." Ronnie says "Yeah. But I couldn't half murder a McVitie."  ;D

Don't worry about it, you quoted what to me is a fair & reasonable price. It's not a reflection on you when another cleaner prices it cheaper by that much.
I bet you that when he starts doing it he will realise that he has put the wrong price in (we have all been there).
Don't stress about it, have a great holiday!  ;D

That lack of phone call is the only real issue as far as I would be concerned.
I bet the customer would be the first to complain if he turned up for work one day and was sent away without compensation.  I've got the front to ask for it these days too - say £20 for turning up.  I wouldn't expect to get it but from a one off messer, I would certainly ask.
