Sorry GUTTERING Again !!!
« on: October 22, 2005, 08:47:14 pm »
Just purchased a 7m lance, body strap  and gutter attachment from Northern Tools for just over £100.

Has anyone used one before and do they do the job ?

Regards,

Sarah

Would have loved an Omnipole and gutter attachment or even better an Omnivac but alas Xmas is around the corner.

They do work pretty well but you do get some come over the top but only takes a few minutes to clear up after.

Thanks Paul,

Is there are throw back because of pressure .  I was told that happened on another brand.

Also do you build in a w/c because of the leakage of ater and/or muck ?

Thanks for the help - I was begining to think no-one else had used one of these and that everyone could afford the Omnipole version at 5 times the cost.

Hello Sarah

Watch it when you first pull the gun on the lance as it can kick up.
The best way to use it is have it as short as possible so it just goes inthe gutters and when you pull the trigger on the gun pull down a bit.
Also pull it along the gutters not push as it's easier to control.

No i tell the customer that there will be a bit of mess while im doing it.
Whatever comes over i just pressure wash it away afterwards only takes a few minutes.

Also when doing the gutters i rinse until i see clear water comming out of the gutters that way i know there perfectly clean.

Hi Kev,

Yes it attaches to a pressure washer and you purchase the gutter attachment seperately.  They come in a few different lengths (for different jobs).

I registered on their web site for the catalogue which came 3 days later.  Ordered on-line as well.

The 7m lance is currently out of stock but due in approx early Nov.

PS:  Read somewhere the body strap is a must so ordered one of those as well - apparently it takes a lot of the strain off your back & arms.

I thought about this but you still may have to go up a ladder, the most common
fault I have come accross is blockage in the 'u' bend in the down pipe. You then
have to strip it down to clear the blockage.

Have been looking into a high powered vacuum but still haven't found the right
  one.

Your right - if there is a blockage then it has to be cleared first, particularly if its at the top of the downpipe.

If the water is running into the drain system then this tool (which works on the same principal as the Onmi one) will be safer to use.

The technique is to start at the vlosest point to the downpipe and blast a section of say a foot, making sure it flushes.  Continue along the gutter in small sections until the end.  This avoids any large blockage.  Apparently you then clean the drain area at the bottom of the downpipe and test to see if the water is running freely accross the top gutter.

It should be a much quicker and safer process than by hand.  Of course there are excetions - 2 ft plants etc etc but in the main its should help us.

Will let you all know if its worth the money when we have tried it.

Sarah

Most blockages will actually be removed by the pressure washer.
Just put it at the top of the downpipe and flush it just takes a bit longer.

The only one's i have had a problem with is when there is a forest growing out of the top.
Then you have no choice but to go up there and pull the large stuff out.

i built my own to do a 3 storey gutter clean, i got a HOOK type of thing from B&Q, then got a 10 M'r pressure hose (drain cleaner) which cost 40 quid

then bolted it all onto a 3 X 3M unger pole, it worked well, i did mention it a year or more ago

Matt,

Wish I'd asked before I purchased - too late now. :'(

Wasn't registered a year ago so misssed the posting.

Can I make a humble suggestion - put it on your web site as a DIY gutter pole for any future w/c who need one.

Regards,

Sarah

Why not just use drain rods and a drop scaraper from a secured ladder. This way you can be certain that you have cleared all the mess.

One of my maintenance contracts includes gutter cleaning and I have always done them this way - far quicker than using a pw and  sections of gutter up to about 30' can be cleaned without moving the ladder.

Hi Paul,

Hubby has been placing the ladder at the end of the gutter and using a purpose scraping gadget to pull all the muck towards him to empty by hand for years but wants to get away from ladderwork - particularly at this time of the year and morso now he does not have anyone to foot the ladders (a cost saving with the introduction of wfp in July this year).

Was convinced this system of gutter cleaning is the way forward and have seen many pictures of how it works.

Already have an industrial petrol pressure washer on board so set up should be minimal.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating so will just have to wait and see if it does save time.  Am pleased it will stop him going up a ladder though.

Kind Regards,

Sarah

The roof of the pudding is in the eating........

The roof of the pudding should be icing with a sprig of holly (which should definitely not be eaten!)

Well rained off today but went and followed up (and got) two new domestic customers = good.

Sorry SS - you should know me by now - I have no idea about Lances for gutter cleaning - but knowing nothing about the subject has never stopped me adding my usual drivel.

Paul.
I've never used a pressure washer on guttering yet.  It's good to know that the swan neck at the top of the guttering will usually be cleared by pressure.  Surely though, much of the debris will go down the down pipe.  No problem when it falls out into an open grating at the bottom but what about when the downpipe goes into the ground?  The usual set up is a trap just underneath the ground, I think.  I have known downpipes to completely fill up from the bottom.  I don't mind pressure washing or cleaning but, personally, I wouldn't want to get into dismantling the guttering - though I have taken apart plastic swan necks.  Also, there is still a lot of non plastic guttering out there which would surely be a pig of a job to dismantle.
There are certain jobs I would completely avoid.  Occasionally I have suggested they get a plumber rather than a window cleaner.  :)

Hi All,
Very interesting topic, I have my first guttering job to do next week, I haven't got time to buy an attachment for the pressure washer so will be using ladders, Has anyone got any tips on using this method? If the fascia boards stick out a foot from the wall where do you put the ladder? etc etc.

Many Thanks

Paul
