pump calibration
« on: August 09, 2011, 10:57:08 pm »
anyone have problems with this fitted new flowjet which is lovely and quiet when working but whether auto cal or manual cal, cant seem to stop the hose connector blowing out - so im still running off main pump untill i can resolve - would it make a diff if the two pumps i have are diff makes?

and in case your wondering when i lower the calibration manually when it doesnt blow the connector i dont get anough pressure to force water out of brush so im a little stumped.  ???

i was told by purefreedom, using their controller,to connect pole to hose run a it out a good few meters and extend pole to full height, set to autocal switch on and let it flow for a while and the calibration will find its own level, which on mine is 45 we ran two poles on the same pump all day yesterday and had no problems  even when we lowered the psi/flow to a lower setting then what we normally use it worked great

Hi Mark,

I assume that you have a pump controller that you are trying to calibrate.

If so and not knowing what make it is then you need to manually adjust the pressure lower by doing it in small steps.

We use digital Varistreams and just 2 point drop can be sufficient.

Controllers need to be calibrated to the pump they are coupled with as each pump draws different amounts of current under load. (Varistreams are factory calibrated to pair with 100 psi Shurflo pumps.)

If you have a flow rate of 1.5 lpm and you slowly restrict the flow of water, the pump will need to work harder to supply the same amount of water through the restriction. To do this it needs more electrical current. So the amps the motor draws goes up. It can be likened to driving your car or van on a flat open road at 50mph say - you will be just feathering the throttle pedal to maintain that speed and use minimal fuel doing so. As you come to a hill, you will need to give the engine more fuel to continue up that hill at 50 mpg by pressing the accelerator further to the floor. As you get over the brow of the hill you need to take your foot back off the accelerator to maintain the same speed.

So when you calibrate your controller all you are doing is telling the controller at what point of current draw (amps) you need it to cut out at. Your pump controller can't see you turn off the water supply to your pole hose, so needs to sense it. As you drop the calibrated value on your controller you are telling the controller at what current draw you want the controller to cut the current draw at. This translates to reduced water pressure.

Thanks for this additional suggestion on how to use autocal. Our Varistreams are manual adjust only so don't have the autocal setting. There was a thread on here a while back on this topic and if I remember correctly LeeGLS had a work around as someone's autocal didn't work for him.

Good advice here. The Varistream does not have an auto cal, However if you are using a Eco Flow which may be branded differently depending on where you are getting from. You will need to re set the auto cal for the new pump. You will need to connect it up and run the hose and pole out then follow the blow steps.

1. (I know it sounds daft but  ;)) Turn the controller on by pressing the up or down buttons. Keep the button held in until the display lights up.
2. Press the up button until the display shows 30
3. Press and hold the enter button and up button to go into calibration mode
4. press the down button to select auto cal, then push enter to start
5. The display will show 99 during the autocal set up
6. after a short period 20 seconds or so the cal will be displayed.
note: this will differ from system to system generally will be between 25 and 50
7. press the enter button to set and exit the auto cal function.

The auto cal setting will stay in memory even when the controller is switch off.

Hope this helps if not let me have your email address and I will send the quick start guide

ran mine again today and decided just for the devil of it to lower the cal from 45 to 40 and guess what it started spluttering.

so have reset to 45 and everything works fine ;D

The Auto cal and Calibration will always differ system to system, hopefully the flexibility 0n the 0- 99 range there is a setting for every system.

thanks guys so awesome replies here and gonna try them out and get back to you with result -

mine is a digital controller and the new pump is a flowjet -

ive now ordered another flowjet (dual pump system) as the other one is on its way out after just a year (annoying, much).
