Hi all,
Have concluded that protecta-balls are just a pain - that have no real benefit - and just snagg the pole hose all the time. Anyone else agree ?

Disagree.
I first thought that, but changed my mind over time, as my connectors last a whole lot longer with protection.

I slice the sides off them until they are about 2cm across, i.e. long and thin in line with the hose.
Best of both worlds; they rarely snag yet they protect connectors.

What I use is electricians tape, just wrap it around your hose and build it up in the shape of rugby ball.
