Ive got foldable ones, i love em, fit tidy in van. Ok i wouldnt be up and down them all day but perfect for here and there. Mine arent big enough for gutters either.

Ive looked at the collapasable ones before and the more expensive ones look pretty sturdy

I had one when I started (may still have had it today had I not left it on the pavement and driven off without it  ::))
They are good for carrying through houses and to gain access to flat roof etc and if used correctly and maintained, quite safe.

I bought one online last month (eBay, £60 inc. delivery) because I was fed up carrying ladders through people's houses. They're pretty good, nice weight to them. You'll have no chance of reaching guttering though. At 3.8m they're not very high - I can't understand why they don't make a longer one. They do me ok for 1st floors.

I've got the 3.8 as well. Think they are the biggest you can get. Superb bit of kit. I use mine for access over garages and also to go through houses round peoples back. You can reach a 1st floor window with them but I wouldn't use them all day long as they are fairly heavy.

Do the folding ladders lock at any angle? Or just the preset angles to make steps, scaffold etc

Silverleaf I think your on about the other ladders which are basically 4 pieces an fold up. I've also got one of them and I use these for access to clean conservatories. Cracking kit and a hell of a lot cheaper than the so called 'proper' conny ladders. The ladders the op is on about are telescopic ones that fold down inside each other

I was thinking of one of the fourway folding ones for conny roofs too - thanks for the replies.

Sorry to hijack the thread, don't know anything about the telescopic :-[

Thanks for the tip.  Just returned from my local Maplin's with their last one (except for the display model).
I had a telescopic ladder once before but it wasn't robust enough.  You had to pull a wire loop below the bottom rung to use it.  The mechanism failed - safely I might add.  The one I bought today is a different build and design.  I sense that it is more durable than my earlier purchase.  I would only use it to access the occasional flat roof - something that I need less and less as poles have become lighter and longer.

If this one lasts, it will probably pay for itself eventually in reduced diesel consumption because I will store my 3.5 mtr double.
