Pre filters problem
«
on:
August 06, 2011, 08:54:18 pm »
Hi all just trying to figure out why or what I've done wrong. I bought a sediment and carbon filter to replace my existing ones 20 inch however upon testing the Tds after it has passed through both filters it is marginally better. 380 before 370 after . Any ideas what I've done wrong , it's got me beat
Thanks all

Are you taking the reading straight away as you do need to flush it through for a bit.

This is about right for pre-filters.
A sediment filter will remove non-dissolved solids which only slightly affects the TDS reading, if at all.
A carbon filter mainly removes chlorine in order to protect an RO membrane. This will also not remove much in the way of TDS.
The RO membrane will do the job of removing the dissolved solids whereas the pre-filters are there to protect the membrane.

Cheers I flushed them for an hour like suggested and just thought I would test it before I plugged it back onto the ro. I have never tested before the ro before just predators it would be a lot lower . Thanks for the help

I never flush through new pre-filters. Well only for a few seconds.
If I flushed for an hour or so I'd have to regenerate my water softener.
