securing your tank?
« on: August 04, 2011, 07:48:13 am »
What's the best way to secure your tank?  Is their a way of doing it where its not permanent so if I wanted to take the tank out at any time I want. But when in use its safely secured or is this not possible.

Hi Dean,

Depeding on the size of the tank, you could use ratchet straps, as long as you have secure anchorage points.  Not sure about insurance with these though.

Otherwise you could get a purpose made cage, e.g. from GrippaTank: http://www.grippatank.co.uk/ReadyFit-Tank-Straps-Cages.html

you can get tank fixing kits which are made from 1" square metal with all joints etc which fixes to your bulkhead. This is a solid yet removable and imo is safer than straps  ;). Got mine from Toucan Environmental. Hope this helps    ;D

I don't have a bulk head, its a medium size van, nissan vanette cargo, payload 955KG. At the moment I'm using 25L barrels as I have a trolley system as just starting out.

ah! then in that case I would strap it until I could afford bulkhead and fixing kit, unless your quite happy with simple but effective strap. I only suggest bulkhead etc coz its a proper purpose made safety system.

The engine on mine is under the front seats so they unclip and the seats fold backwards to get the the engine, so I can't get a bulk head fitted otherwise the seats won't fold back, its a great van tho ideal for size and weight load capacity, twin sliding doors. It has got cargo securing points bolted to the floor to strap things down have six points 2 at front 2 in middle and 2 at end of van.

I used to have a vanette, and had the same trouble securing the tank because of the seats,
Personally i wouldnt trust the anchor points.
I had angle iron bolted through the floor all around the tank with shackles through the angle iron and 5 tonne ratchet straps over the top and through the centre baffle to secure the tank

Or you could get a super-zero system from Gardiners.

Oh, hang on.....

Did you mean Toucan Supplies Ltd Nic?
I have ordered items from this company in the past but they seem to have disappeared off the radar  ???
Shame really as I was happy with the items and service they provided.

Hi Dean, isn't it funny that not one of the repliers have asked what size tank you are refering about????

Plenty of silly advise when they don't know the size of tank and that will provide you with the answer. If its a small 300/400lt tank use the vans pre assembled points (if applicable) if not available have them made by a local fabrication company with extra strong steel.

If over 400lt then get a local fabrication company to provide bolting points through the chassis this will give you extra secure points, they will also provide a tank chassis frame cheaply but provides secure fixtures that will cope with an "accident" incident.

Cheap = no safety

Local Fabrication companies are brilliant, they can build you what you want at a good price.

I used long shank M12 eye bolts straight through the floor with a (SWL) Safe Working Load of 0.5t stamped on each, x4 to strap down a cagged 500l tank, plus 100mm steel washers dble bolted underneath the van, and 6 straps =ing  8ton neatly around it. If this is right, means the eye bolts will take 2 ton of pressure before they fail.  But remember dean, eye bolts are designed to give all their stength when pulled upwards, so if you do fit these, set it up to make sure the strap claws will tug upwards on impact, not sideways if u know what i mean.  ;)
