Twin poles running on a single battery
« on: July 31, 2011, 07:54:43 am »
Im about to install a second flow controller and pump in my van. The auxiliary battery currently running my primary pump is a 90amh. Tha auxiliary is charged from a split charge relay from the alternator. Has any one tried running two pumps from a battery of this size. Im mainly domestic so I do move the van quite often throughout the day, however I do have some days where I might only have to move the van half a mile.
Any feedback or advice please.
Rich

We run 2 poles, 2x100m microbore hose, 1 di unit from 1x100 psi pump and one battery with no flow control, no split charging & no problems whatsoever for the last 6 years.

We're running 2xpoles, 2x microbores(100M),2x100psi pumps at high flow with electronic flow control.  All from the van's own batteries (Hiace has two).  No problems yet.

What is the amh on your battery? Has this set up ever run the battery flat?

It's two x 55Ah batteries in parallel, so 110Ah in total.  The double battery is standard on the van and everything runs direct from those, so no leisure battery.

I've not run the battery flat at any point, though two man working only started a month ago, so I don't know whether winter might have an impact.  We are doing nine or ten hour days most times.

I think it depends what pumps you have. I've gone thru a few batteries over the years and that is with a split charge relay and regular bench charging. I've been running 2 flojet though and they punish the batteries.

It's not so much the AH but the ability of the battery to cycle. A leisure or deep cycle battery can be cycled (fully charged to fully flat) up to 1,000 times depending on quality and spec. A car battery isn't designed to be drained continuously. They usually are just to provide high starting ampage and a drop of about 10-15% in capacity that's then quickly recharged by the alternator to 100%. By this then the battery doesn't really cycle at all. If you do completely cycle a car battery it can normally last about 10-15 cycles.

You're probably right on the theory - I just like the simplicity of it; all I can say is that up to now it's worked fine.  I also know this is how Alex Gardiner runs his systems.
