Broken Roof Tile
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:49:07 pm »
I climbed on an extension roof today and broke a roof tile. Previously the husband said the tiles were a bit dodgy the last windy went on them but he was only small, he said I didn't have to go up there if I didn't didn't want. So I left it alone. A few monrhs later the wife said the windows above the extension were dirty and could I go up I told her about the roof but she asked me to do it as a one off and now I've broke one. I'm collecting tonight and I'm going to tell them about it but don't think I should have to pay. Can I ask what others on here would do?

i carry various  glues/ fillers / silicone/instant cement   in my van  for  quick fixes of things like that .

i sometimes then  rub  dry dirt over the repaired area, while the glue is still tacky   to hide the join  totally

Nobody can force you to a job if you think it is unsafe, or if you were to do it would cause damage.

You chose to do the job despite being warned that the tiles were fragile . . . . you broke a tile so you should fix it.

just sort it,it aint dear, better than getting a bad name, your more likely to gain a good name in replacing it,and thats worth a load more than a silly tile!!

Just explain to them and apologise, but tell them that you won't be doing that again!
Just imagine, if the cracking of this tile had made you lose your footing and you had fallen and broken your ankle, you wouldn't be working for a while, let alone cleaning one window as a one off :)
For the future, tell them you'll do it from the inside if they are in. Solved :)

You shouldn't be walking on tiled roofs - end of subject. You are lucky it was only a tile you broke.

I suppose on one hand your right and I shouldn't walk on a tiled roof. But in my area I'd be the only windy who doesn't I'd probably lose a fair amount of customers as a result. I know the answer is wfp pole but i'm just starting out in this game and until i'm making more money its not an option.

If you slip and fall and break your neck, you won't be a windy at all, and won't be able to save up for a pole system. :)
So the custie says it is safe to walk on the roof, so you walk on it and it all gives way underneath you, you break your neck and wreck the roof, who will the custie want compo from.....you! Just cos the custie  says it is safe, doesn't mean it is.
Why should you lose custies, if you explain what could happen? They would understand if you explain it correctly to them. :) If they don't, then they are not worth having :)

You didn't need to do it. You broke it you fix it. Better a broken tile than a damaged reputation.
