render on tumble blocks
« on: July 20, 2011, 05:44:57 pm »
been booked to clean a large area of tumble block, most of it is straight forward, but the guy had some rendering work done on his house and the contractors he used left there usual trade mark, (see attatched photos) as it's render will it come off easier than cement, is there anything i can put on to
loosen it up first, or is just down to hammer & chisel and good old turbo nozzel?
thanks in advanced,
jim.
!! if it can get dirty it can get clean !!

I get the most off with the turbo nozzle before using a hydrochloric acid based cleaner ie brick acid or a descaler which could be any limescale remover or even drain acid. Remember it will also attack the blocks so do small areas and aggitate with a wire brush. PPE should be worn and for the tree huggers dispose of the waste in a responsible manner

I can only re-iterate what I have said before "A Mild Diluted Phosphoric Acid" will do the same job and:

No environmental issues
No spacesuits.
Little or No Damage to the substrate

I'll stay and hug the trees and look after myself, my staff and anyone else who happens to be in the vicinity Thanks!

Kevin, with all due respect brick acid is widely available from the DIY sheds and the only phosphoric based product I have seen have been shower screen descalers - anything specialised is like rocking horse poo in this corner. When I was at the soft drinks factory they had a Diversy product that was a phosphoric based descaler/sanitiser which was the nuts but they stopped it because it reacted very badly with caustic

Sorry don't know your name!  I totally agree with you regarding Brick/Hydro Acid being freely available from the Sheds and most Builders Merchants and I also agree that it's inexpensive to purchase and it does the job in the right hands.

I just feel that cleaners/restorers/clients need to know they have, and there is a choice, and other methods to achieve something.  It is important to us as a company to offer our clients a choice and educate them.  Once we have offered all possibilities then the choice is theirs.

Incidentally I was so frustrated not being able to get products locally or even Nationwide that we needed as a restoration company,  is one of the main reasons we opened a specialist warehouse stocking exclusively restoration and specialist products all under one roof you cannot purchase or are difficult to source elsewhere.
