A bit of help required please - before I burn my house down.
« on: October 15, 2005, 06:25:38 pm »
I've just purchased a battery charger and started charging the battery for my trolley system.

Unfortunately; upon reading the instructions it says I shouldn't use it to charge any battery less than 20 Ah.

I've just had a look at my battery and it's 17 Ah - so obviously smaller - but only 3 Ah's out (what-ever an Ah is).

Am I doing something dangerous?

17 Ah means 17 Amps per hour  i think

the danger of using a bigger charger than the battery is, it might overcharge and catch fire

at least thats what i remmber from a guy who installs Leisure batteries in caravans etc

Cheers, mate.  I'll not go to bed with it left on then.  I'm a 'bodger' as you probably know by now.

'Ah, that'll do!' is almost my catch-phrase.

Though most usually have an automatic cut out system/safety device.  Though I would probably not leave it on over night or when your out.  For the record.....I asked hubby!  He confirmed what I thought.

Cheers, Sair,

Too late though.  I bought one from Argos this morning!  Wrong type, but I aim to get my money's worth unless my house burns down first.

Argos have a 14 day money back policy I think.  Return it with no reason other than it was unsuitable.

It seems to be working fine!  I've put it on trickle charge, and tommorow when I erect the new shed, I'll run a cable through the cat flap and charge it in there.

There's only a 3 Ah difference!

You are running a risk of overcharging your battery with devastating results.
Unless you use an intelligent charger or get one that charges to a max of 17 amp hrs.

A friend of mine has no recognisable face now because of exactly this situation. He "got away" with it for a while then he happened to be there when it finally blew. This one certainly isn't worth the risk for the sake of a few quid.

Amp Hrs..  a simple explanation:

Most batteries are rated in amp-hours (Ah). An amp-hour is a rate of one amp of electricity for one hour. A 100Ah battery will in theory give 1 amp for 100 hours or 100 amps for 1 hour or some other value pro rata. EG 5 amps for 20 hrs.

Hope this helps

Andrew

Aaaww, Andrew.  Not fair.  I've disconected it!  Wor Lass read you post and made me.

I'll try charging it again tomorrow in the shed - once I've put it up!

It's only "3 Ah's" difference.  Aaawwww; it's not fair. :-[

Thanks for your advice.

Regards,

Tosh

having read Andrews post, I agree with Wor Lass!   Take it back & buy one suited to your requirements.   Not worth the risk really is it?
