i lease my car. had one van on lease which i now own. have another on lease but will own in 18 months and one on finance.

(the last ones on finance as youu can now claim 100% of the cost in year one)

Any reason for asking?

I used to lease my taxis but leasing is not a very good way to go on a van. My opinion of course but you are just buying the van for them and then having to hand it back at the end of the deal.

my lease deals have always been on the basis i buy it at the end of the term for a minimal amount. my last deal cost me 75 quid.

as long as there a third party involved you can buy the van ok (i think thats correct anyways)

Hi Vince,

Leasing is a very personal decision and 2 people will see the same thing in 2 totally different ways. I would never rent a TV set, but years ago many did.

With regard to vehicles, you are still owning a depreciating asset no matter how you 'finance' it. With leasing you have to look at the long term picture which may be 5 to 10 years into the future.

Leasing is mainly financing the vehicles depreciation plus interest, where basic HP is financing the whole vehicle  plus interest. If you paid cash for the van, then you save on the interest portion of the loan but you then have nothing in the bank and still have a depreciating asset.

I knew many people who were 'cash rich' still choosing to finance their vehicles as they paid for there vehicles with money they still were going to earn rather than what they had earnt.

On the other side, most finance houses wouldn't/won't lease a van to some trades, ie builders as they know the van will probably be unrecognisable after 4 years.

yes but... No but..... With a van in this trade you are not likely to do enough miles to actually put the wear on the van that you are effectively paying for whether you do it or not. So taking the longer view, compared to say a parts delivery van, its not really going to fit the profile for leasing.
Depreciation is not real until you come to sell the van, it is only a notional concept up to that point although I am still getting tax relief on it year on year. I cannot see any reason to get rid of my van for years.
I have heard the argument many times over that some people lease their vans even when they are cash rich. I have to say I have only heard it from people in the leasing industry but, never the less, I have been told it many times. The question I then ask is why would they want to do that and that usually stumps the salesman.

Fords have just dropped their prices by 20% this week, Vauxhall are doing equivilent deals as are most of the others. My wife just bought here second Hyundai car new this week at an absolutely amazing price

I factor in the cost of a van as part of the overhead. I wouldn't pay for a van upfront as I would rather keep the money in the business. I have leased a car because the amount of money it would cost me in 2 years would be under the amount the car would depreciate. I find it strange that they can lease a car for the amount of money they do

But is that based on the List price of the car or what you can actually can get one for? As I said before there are lots of deals.

That's based on what you can get the car for at a discounted price of 3 grand on list
