spotting part 2
« on: June 21, 2011, 03:26:08 pm »
ok so as you probably all know by now im having trouble with wfp spotting

Now today i noticed something very interesting, i did one of my houses with this faint spotting and try as i might i could not see the spots! "very strange i thought. oh well on to the next house"

when i got to the next house i was looking for spotting again and couldnt see any, then all of a sudden as the clouds dispersed the spots appeared!

the reason they became visable is because there was a clear blue sky and the sun in the refletion of the glass!
this was a light bulb moment for me because i realised that you need these two elements to actually see these faint white spots well most the time unless the spotting is bad!

so i ask you all to check your south facing windows with the sun out and no clouds in the refletion of the glass! i think the reason you cant see the spots otherwise is because the clouds are white and makes the white spots invisable!

honestly try it! in a cloudy sky the glass looks perfectly gleaming too!

GB are you absolutely sure these spots were not there before you wfp'd them?

Glass can very often look "spotty" when viewed at the right angle & reflecting from the sky. Often, if you look at the same glass face on, you do not see any "spots" whatsoever!

These marks are "on" the glass & can be either old, natural mineral stains or imperfections in the surface. I've come across this many times, I do a hotel with very large windows & they are the same. When looked at from "the" angle they look quite a mess to be honest. However, they are perfectly clean & when looked through at eye level are crystal clear with no marks/spotting etc. When this is the case, you will find that nothing will shift these marks, which doesn't really matter anyway, it's not your cleaning that's at fault but just the nature of the glass. ;)

Next time this happens GB, get up your ladder & see if these here spots are visible or not when viewed face on.

I have a few windows that are always spotted - not all over, but in the same place every time (eg top corner/bottom corner).

I discovered that these spots are on the inside - between the 2 panes of glass.  They are always there, although not always easy to see.

I have decided that the 'sealed unit' was defective from the start, or that it is a sign that the unit is about to fail.

Don't forget that there are often marks, spots, even circles between the panes ie on the inside of the outside pane. Clearly these panes are not 100% free of marks on manufacture. They are often missed by the customers who don't know they are there.

thanks mate. reading your reply as sort of shifted my opinion about things alittle! thanks so much  ;)

now, to answer your question. I cant be positive that the spots wernt there before i wfp them.

its really really good to hear im not the only one to see these faint spots
but i do think my technique was a little rushed before i changed my ways ;D lack of rinsing probably being my biggest fualt, i dunno.

and yes i'll do as you say and get my ladder out and see whats what with the spots, ive already been around my whole round (nearly) and made a note of spotted windows, so next time i clean these windows i will trad them and possibly do some hard water removal if necessary.

ive got some MDR if there really bad, if not i'll first try normal trad then move on to cillit bang lime and grime (as suggested from someone on this forum) then as a last resort MDR and a scraper blade!  ;D

thanks mate, youve made a sad man happy today!!!

Hello GB, for your own experiment try cleaning the bottom half of the window only (halfway up the glass) and cut in with the water flow v slightly above where your brush has touched - leave it to dry (15mins this weather) then check its if it clear (as it should be) if it is? then the prob is coming from the frames, if its still spotting maybe its your water?

Remember, when you were trad you were never looking for spots or inspecting from different angles.

I'm not saying you won't get genuine spotting caused by wfp but I'm almost 100% certain that any spotting caused by wfp would clean off VERY easily if it was indeed the case. You've mentioned before that these "spots" wouldn't come off? In my experience, these marks that won't come off have not been caused by you, I'm convinced though that you are only seeing them for the first time due to how you are now looking at the glass. ;)

"I'm almost 100% certain that any spotting caused by wfp would clean off VERY easily"

Thats what i thought mate. i mean the highest tds ive used is 15ppm im guessing!

And yeah ive probably only just noticed them because im now really really really inspecting from all angles and using the sun in a blue sky (which i thing is an important factor) to spot them, no pun intended  :)

thanks again mate, i really appreciate your time!!!

hope i can return the favour one day to everyone whos helped me on this matter, of whom there are too many to mention!

thanks for bearing with me and not just telling me to shut up about spots because your sick of hearing it!  ;D ;D ;D

Upto 15pps? maybe this is the prob??  ??? on some glass u could get away with this? and others maybe not?  I dont go over 3tds, but as another member once said on this forum (tds myth) ! - This guy reckond he cleaned @ 20pps and no probs? (domestic or comercial?) i dont know.

15ppm wouldn't be enough to cause anything to be honest. I've cleaned at 40ppm before with spot free results! ;D

I'm not recommending that though, I got caught out being lazy with the TDS meter! :-X

its either your water or brush
and if it's not, your not cleaning properly
(or a combination of the 3)

use 000 water and test the water coming out the brush
put a new/clean brush on
they try just cleaning some glass
clean the inside then check the results

anything else isnt your fault
(eye test maybe)
