home made trailer systems
« on: June 19, 2011, 04:58:24 pm »
has anyone put a half decent size tank in a trailer and made a nice system i.e- fixed on the hose reel all nice etc? would appreciate any thoughts or pics, dont want to get into a trailer debate, already use a trailer and really happy it suits well, but only carrying barrels for my trolley, sick of filling individual barrels and now employing a lad so dont want him lifting too much to minimise risk, anyone got any pics? thanks, Andy

I made one with a erde 142 trailer (500kg payload), put a flat 500l tank in it, ratchet straped it to the axle, made a pump box from the parts out of a backpack attached a 60m minibore hose & reel and it worked great - u could only really fill it to about 450l though bcos of the payload - i never used it myself as a built it for a friend.

I wouldnt fancy towing 500l tho dude, 250 max, maybe 350

The one i bought was second hand, but it was as new (£255 ebay) £430 in halfords - it had also been 10mm ply lined out, so it only needed a couple of bars of wood about 1 inch thick either side and it was flush, my mate is still currently using it and has put more fixings in it for dual operators! he loves it as he got 2 keep his reliable little bm compact, (im van mount myself) - The erde 122 (£300) would take a flat 210l flush at the front with enough room @ the back for 2 spare 25l barrels 4 top up, your pump box and your hose reel - BUT remember if u set them at the front of your trailer (4 more space) u will have to go through the floor with a couple of slits at the rear of the tank for the straps to go in (plus make sure u cover the drilled metal holes with a flat metal strip otherwise if u have a smack the straps will slice!), so u can get that proper sqaure affect on the axle, (wrap around the axle several times, then once around the tank, if u know what i mean) bcos on impact the tank will go staight through the front of the trailer and hit the rear of your car (aslo make sure u have biz car ins to cover u as the coppers WILL pull u over as there intrigued with what u r carrying) - you would also need 2 check & change the straps from time to time, underneath the trailer because the road water, salt & s**t will wreck them. hope this helps m

Trailer systems are often more prone to frost damage overnight if kept outdoors so think about insulation and getting a cover so it makes any frost protection heater more effective.
It's a game of three halves!

Before getting my latest van, I used to use a DIY trailer system in a box trailer with a 400kg payload.

the floor area was 3' by 4' so a 250l flat went in fine with a little space at the rear. I had my battery/pump box stapped on top which was easily removed on frosty nights.

I was too near the max weight to carry anything else, so it had to go in the back of my vehicle or on the roof racks.

Looked good because I had the trailer signwritten, but in general was a pain with parking and reversing.

Much easier all round with everything in the one vehicle
