Twin DI ?? Resin problem?
« on: June 17, 2011, 05:33:53 pm »
Can anyone help on this - ive got a static 40" champ system, firstly from 420tds, i had the tap pressure to go in @ 38psi which = 16tds to DI - Then i opened the tap on the RO more to experement and went in lower @ 30psi which = 10tds ??? I thought these worked better under pressure? Plus im only getting about 3000l from a 7ltr vessel b4 the tds creeps up on resin (TULSION) is this normal?. Ive even tried using twin DI's and rotating them, when one hit 3tds i put a new one in front of it, but it wasnt long b4 they both had the same reading? Is aTWIN DI a good idea? Ive also changed the two 20" pre filters. I spoke to a guy @ daqua and he reckons water could be leaking back in from the top of the DI head, has anyone else had this? Ive got my system on all evening & night, with a ballcock inside the 1000l ibc, so the system is under pressure for upto 6hrs until i turn of the tap the next mornin, im now thinking the pressure lock could be causing the resin prob? I was thinking of getting a water timer and just judging it, so i dont leave the vessel under pressure to long? Any ideas cheers m.

You're wasting your time with twin DI's at those readings. Stick with one IMO, you run the risk of it having the opposite effect!

For starters a 7ltr vessell is too small as you've probably only got 5ltrs of resin in it. Get twin 11s, 3/4 full and run at 30psi and your resin will last a lifetime. Your tds dropped to 10ppm because you increased the waste, this is totally normal.

You're putting the new resin first???

Old resin first, freshest resin nearest your tank!!! The older stuff takes the hit, newer finishes the job!

yes lads old res first, then new b4 the tank - but ive been having a think, that i reckon leaving the system under pressure, it may be forcing them to malfunction - when u take the head and down pipe apart theres not much 2 them and on a pressure lock maybe the plastic is distorting causing a wrong cycle within the vesell?? f knows its doing me nut in!

Anymore help?? thanks

ive noticed since ive been using tulsion it doesnt last long, my first di is only about 15 when the 2nd di starts to creep up as well!  :o

in my experience this didnt happen with dowex. the first di was at nearly tap tds (300ppm) before the second creeped up

also i shake the vessals when they start creeping up, do this a few times untill shaking them stops working, this will save a bit of resin!

I first used purolite mb400, which i heard wasnt that great - but since changing over to tulsion im thinking im using more?? It may be worth me getting a 6ltre sample of all of them (dowex, tulsion, purolite, unger) and trying that ? I dont know if the new unger one is just a re-badge of the 1 of the others though?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Im starting 2 wonder if tulsion is as good as they say? Im now directin my attention 2 my vessels to find out if its that - i done a experement with 1 vessel by putting tissue around the bottom filter, bagging it then duck tappin it tight. I then put it to the tap and turned on @ 40psi / so in theary no water sould come out the other end. It didnt, (but i sould of left it on longer) i then re -striped it & the tissue was wet! So this tells me water is prob leaking back into the top head seal, ive heard that the cheap plastic inside can distort a bit under pressure, bcos i dont think it went in through bag or tape. This would mean that when the stop cock in the ibc kicks in and the vessel comes under pressure, making the water mix @ both ends? - maybe thats whats killing my resin? Im now going 2 try a water timer, so it shuts off water @ the tap b4 the ballcock in the ibc, and c how that goes.
