Hi Cliff,

When you say garage canopy! Do you mean a domestic lean-to or a commercial big (petrol) station?

Also how grubby is it?

Regards
Alan

Firstly apologies that I never got the risk assessment back to you last weekend. Do you still need it.

As far as your fuel station canopy.

You should have specialist insurance to clean on fuel stations

They usually require your engine to have a flame arrester and a chalwyn valve - I don't know why my van ain't got one

If you get the insurance ;)

We get asked to do the canopies regularly and I have one booked in for next week.

You can clean a fuel station canopy from the floor using an extending pressure washing lance, make sure you tidy up all the pumps etc afterwards and expect to get soaked as you will be working directly undeneath the water coming down.

I use this method because it is quick, you can save the cost of access and I have a bit of a thing for getting wet!!! ;D

Consider when the fuel station closes, whether it remains open 24 hours and whether people use the forecourt as a walk through

Good luck

I don't know how the insurance sits if you work with the machine off the fuel station. We tend to do this and work from long hose lengths. I keep the maqchine well away from the actual canopy!

No spark issues then

hi rob  i raised the long hose issue when i sat my SPA course and was told
bluntly dont split hairs       buncefield had not happend then
at the (moment) the canopys are not the issue (untill they are air tight and fitted vac recovery)
new regs are round a (long) corner
the issue is with the storage tanks breather pipes (untill they fit a air tight recovery system)
new regs are round another (longer) corner
if you think fuel is dear now  if they had thierway i dread to think of the cost

Seen a company cleaning the block paving on a fuel station(think it was near Appleton off the M6) and they had a petrol honda sat on the forecourt sucking from a bin with the water source from the building.  :o

Do you have the insurance cover in place. Do you know roughly how much it costs.

I have booked in a forecourt clean for Wed at my local garage, my intention was to keep PW offsite and use 70 mtr of hose, garage owner has not stipulated any insurance issues, but I will speak to him about it, the canopy clean is regarding future works for a chain of garages (Texaco) as they are not happy with there existing cleaner, I am expecting a call from their area manager, will bring up these issues then when I know a little more about what works they want me to quote for.

Rob, would still like that RA if thats OK.

Thanks Guys

On my last legs tonight and on the other laptop. Will send a RA & method statement tomorrow.

As far as insurance is concerned it is your responsibility to make sure that you have it all in order!!

Cheers

Hi,

If you take a look at your current policy within the small print it will exclude forecourts, airports, offshore working etc.

The cover can be obtained at a steep price, and all equipment etc has to meet certain regs etc. The fact that you use a long hose etc, will not be enough!

The odds of anything going wrong maybe be small if you know what your doing, however if things did go T**S up, you would be up the creek without a paddle!

Regards,

Rob
