water cost
« on: May 24, 2011, 03:39:27 pm »
Have i got this right?
My water board have been sniffing around reading the street meters since i installed my ro system, i produce around 450 litres of pure water a week.
I think they read their meters remotely then send the guys out if there is a big increase.
Making water for 10hrs on sunday and they were out monday reading again.
So i,m guessing that pretty soon i'll be on a water meter.
Looked at Southern Waters charges £1.040 for water per cubic metre and £1.877 for waste water.
I think a cubic metre is 1000 litres, is this right?
So who can work out how much for say 500 litres of pure water
Thanks.

I assume you are using a RO set up and lets assume you are producing at 4 parts waste to 1 part pure. Therefore to produce 500 litres you will waste 2000litres and use 2500 litres or 2.5m3 in total.
I am with wessex water and they charge the waste water at 90% of your metered clean water in .
So you will be charged 2.5 x £1.04 = £2.60
and 2.5 x90% x £1.88 = £4.23
So £6.83 to produce 500 litres plus any vat if not in your price already.
If you are di only then its 500 litres of clean and waste so 1/5th of £6.83 = £1.37
If your waste/pur ratio is better than 4:1 then the £6.83 would reduce.
Hope that helps
Andy

the water board have the power to put everyone on a water meter,   what they are doing is checking for leaks, it is common practise, a few extra tons of water on a street is nothing as fill up a few kids pools a few extra baths and that will account for it

Very kind reply from spongebob.

I would say simply, stop being paranoid!  I'm using about 12 times as much as you per week and I only work part time.  They've checked my meter and no problems :o

Before i moved i used to produce at a weekend which would last me the week. EVERY monday morning i would fill up my tank at the front of the house whilst watching the waterboard searching for leaks around the entrance to our estate.

I spoke to a guy once asking why they were there week after week on a monday. He told me that there was a leak on the estate and they had been trying to find it for the past 6 months. All the houses were on meters and they couldnt understand where the water was going.

I knew exactly where the water was going  (though i didnt tell him) - see our house and next doors house were built two years after  the othe 450 houses on the estate due to a lazy builder. The meters were there, but every time we rang to say we havent had a bill, they would say we dont exist as the estate had been metered completley. I told them on 13 occasions what had happened, but they did nothing about it.

We lived there for 4 yrs without paying a water bill and i know that the neighbours we lived next too, still havent paid a bill either. Infact i have been told they are still searching for the mystery leak ;D
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

i once rented a building that was on a big industrial park and each unit paid for the water to the landlord. then the water board started  investigating, turned out the whole estates  supply was via a secret pipe linked in bypassing any meter and all hell broke loose as the landlord hadnt paid water rates since 1976 !   in the end the thieving scrote had to only pay back 5 yrs worth of water although he had been earning a very tidy sum from all the tenants, some were factories

hi paranoid combat here! you are probably all right i do tend to worry a bit too much, worst case scenario is that they put me on a meter, so what! i pay my water bill so nothing to worry about.
I did actually go back trad for a day or two, soon realised how much i need the pure water!
Thanks everyone.
