Do i have to pay?
«

Hi guys, Suppose i've been lucky and never had staff call in sick at all until, today (friday 13th).....One guy called me at 5.26pm he should have started at5pm,he said he'd hurt his hand at his other job(which he finishes at 4pm), he was at the hospital waiting to be x-rayed. Obviously this left me very short staffed and i had to rush over to the site to do the clean myself. So the question is do i still have to pay him for tonight or not? Thanks for any replies....Pauline

Pauline that depends on the contract of employment that you give to your staff
you dont need to pay sick pay there may be a requirment for ssp if you are employing staff
bepending on hours worked you should be able to check ssp on dwp website

How much do you value your staff? You probably don't have to, but I'd be more inclined to think what is the value of the person working for you.
The loss of a few quid, could be very de-motivating, then again, a kind and considerate boss who respects her employees, can be worth a whole lot more!

Thanks for the replies, my main problem was he didn't notify me until nearly half an hour after he should have started work and he'd hurt his hand well before 4pm, so why he didn't let me know i'm not too sure. But it did flag up alot of areas i wasn't satisfied with as regards to his cleaning standards on the job. I have spoken to this guy on quite a few occasions in the last 4 months as to certain aspects of his cleaning and wearing of uniform, he gets very aggitated when i speak to him i just get the feeling he isnt keen on a woman been his boss, and i know from what he's said to other staff he doesn't take too kindly to been told what to do. Anyway thats another subject but thanks again guys. pauline
