Fiberglass or carbon fiber pole to start out with?
« on: May 05, 2011, 09:43:12 pm »
Hi
Just starting out, looking at poles online, looking to set up cheap to styart as on limited budget, are glass fiber poles ok?

And size wise, I was thinking 22 foot, rather than 17 foot, what you think?

if i was starting out again and know what i do now i would go for a carbon fibre pole .
if i was only planning on doing a few months work then a harris pole will be sufficient .

As DS says - if your serious go for carbon - Gardiners SLX25 will cover 99.9% of domestic work.

the only other pole to consider if your on a budget is the Gardiners CLX27 - GF & CF mix.

dont bother with any GF pole - heavy - whippy - Heavy

i bought a 20ft fibre glass jobbie when i first started.what a load of crap!far too heavy and bendy!!

then i bought a 25ft hydra alloy pole.better, more rigid but damn heavy to use as an everyday pole.

then i got a 22ft clx.great pole!a bit too whippy fully extended though but its pretty useable all day.

then i got a 25ft SLX.TOP NOTCH POLE!STRONG,RIGID,LIGHT!EVERYTHING I NEED FROM A POLE!!

in hindsight i should of bought a 25ft slx at the start.

go full carbon fibre if your funds will allow.

Have run the whole gamut of poles and on hindsight would buy a SLX-25 day 1.

Cheers
Dave.

Is right.... I started glass fibre and my shoulders are knackered now. Bite the financial bullet and go carbon fibre.
As for height - 24' covers most of what I do, although there are a fewer BIG houses wot need something bigger so i dont have the ridiculous situation of poleing off a ladder  ::)
The good thing about science is that it's true whether you believe it or not.

I have a heap of fibre glass poles on top of my shed, they are all heavy and bendy and rubbish.

Go for carbon or hybrid, you will save money in the long run. I now have a slx 30 and clx 14 they cover most stuff. Next on the list is slx 18.
if it is dirty it is fair game

Def hybrid over fibre glass, best of both worlds - not too expensive but lighter and rigid enough. My 27' CLX (Gardiner hybrid) weighs about the same as a 17' fibre glass, speaks for itself!

Only use my fibre glass for cons. roofs now.

Yes Glass fibre poles are ok. Certainley at the heights you mention. I have and use an 18 foot extel pole and its fine. They tend to get heavy and whippy once you go much over 20 feet, other than that they great and are a good budget pole.
