Back packs are great Neil. You can't compare them to systems , DIY or otherwise. For someone with no 'system' they're a great way to experience the ease of WFP, and for some one with a fitted van system they enable you to get to places you can't get your hose to.

Give carefull thought to the size of tank you will need and the length of pole you will need. A 250 litre tank would do about 10 full houses and a 20/22 foot pole should get you over most connys.
