not sure how to slow flow down for wfp pump.dont want to burn pump out by restricting flow.should i try diy bypass or buy a device?

Definately buy a device.
I can recommend the Varisteam MK2. Allows you to regulate flow at the varistream and /or an inline control and will stop the pump if you stop the flow.
