Groundhog, i did read you're post, what I meant is why the hard and why the soft, is it to do with the temp of the glass or purely the hard in winter theoretically because there is more dirt and grime on the window rather than in the summer ?

It is to do with temperature. Hard rubber needs more pressure to remove solution and in winter it becomes less pliable still, and is even less effective. Think hosepipes, plastic things etc; they are less flexible when its colder.
Use soft all year and you`ll be ok. Hard lasts longer but it doesn`t matter for what it costs.

Unger soft - summer and winter.

If you use good old leave smears fairy liquid or similar, they won't last long but if you use proper window cleaning stuff like GG3/4 or squeegie off, they last ages.
Just chant..... Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. It's beats chanting Tory Tory or Labour Labour.
