removing decals from vehicles
« on: September 29, 2005, 12:54:46 pm »
Hi everyone,

Help please!

Can anybody tell me the safest most effective way to remove those plasticky advertising decals that are on vans & taxis etc without removing the paint underneath?

Any advice welcome!

Thanks

Keith

No probs at all! Use a hair drier and they just curl up and fall off!  :)

just going to say the same thing, the hair dryer is also good in winter for defrosting your van locks so you can get in to the van ;D

I powerwash on hot, and then a light wipe with thinners for the glue thats left behind.
Then give it wash down with traffic film remover.

I would suggest white spirit NOT thinners  :o :o :o

white spirit just as good but not as harsh.
I agree that thinners is a bit harsh, but if your experienced theres not a problem.

Used to use the hair dryer method myself when helping in a sign shop. You usually use tweezers to peel of the Vinyl after heating with a hair dryer as the vinyl will be hot. However, be careful not to scratch the paintwork with the tweezers!!

Kind Regards

Like everyone else has mentioned the first choice is the hair dryer, however if it is a professional thing then you can buy a professional air gun and iron.

The airgun looks like a hair dryer but is smaller and a lot more powerful and the iron has a 2 inch sole plate which is brill for getting all those little bits off and if used with a cloth pad will remove the glue without chemical.

You can get both readily from model aircraft shops at a cost of about £20-£25 each.
Everyone seems normal untill you get to know them!

if you get left with adhesive residue once you've got them off, try WD40!

I have supplied I system to the local constabulary for this exact application.  Buy / hire a steam then has a steam stage facility you that to remove the decal then I supply a gogd quality Tar & Glue to remove any remaining glue still left on vehicle.
