i like the estates,i like hearing the shouted abuse !  mine are quite mild though compared to brixton !         racecourse estate, ipswich      & greenstead estate, colchester ,meant to be one of europes biggest

lately not seen the police helicopter hovering overhead much, probably due to cutbacks  :(

when i first started i bought i small run to get me going(2 days work!)i sacked 1 days worth off straight away as i didnt fancy working and collecting there! ;D ;D ;D

nearly all my work is in very affluent areas and leafy suburbs.much better to work in pleasant surroundings.some parts are quite rural too.

i have got a fair bit of compact estate work but its not on run down council estates.

about half of my works in colch now,i like the drive there thru Brantham etc   a very pleasant drive , better than A12 .

this year im focussing on council houses now iv got a helper, hes a bit of a Chav with long hair and piercing so he fits in well on Greenstead .  im saving an inside job for him,in a truly stinking house on greenstead just to see his face as he emerges after the clean

having said that ,afterwork today he popped in to get his hair lightly trimmed by that butcher-barber(iraqi) on Norwich road (on my recomendation !)   and tomoro i will see how much theyve slashed off him  ;D

There are some places I remember back in UK. Alenton in Derby was always a place you needed to be hard or a fast runner. Wouldn't like to work there or in Sinfin Derby. Burning cars and knife crime were the run of the mill there in the 70's and 80's.

It must be dangerous collecting in areas like that, cash in your pocket and everyone knows you're the windy.

how much was Queensway kebab shop job?   i find it hard to believe anybody would focus on small commercial fronts in Ipswich . i got turned down by "the tasty wok" on Nacton road  when i tried to increase from £3 to £4   (in+out)

Heysham Kingsway estate in the 90's. There were rougher estates, but I wouldn't take on work there.
This estate at one end in a cul-de-sac on one morning alone I watched as 2 guys turned up in a Cortina 2.3L and went into my custies house. They came out discussing where they'd nicked it from, one asks the others if they were ready.
In plain daylight they pull on balaclavas, open a big bag and pull out various guns including shotguns. Another asks how long it'll take to get to Kendal and off they go. AFTER my custie comes over and says to ask his missus for cash as he's just off out!
A little later 2 kids pull up in a nice peugeot (for the times), obviously not theirs and start stripping it. Within a couple of hours it's an unrecognisable shell.
Another house and next door who I don't clean is playing lots of Irish tunes. Well, my family has close ties to Ireland and I know what these "folk" songs are about. While I go round the back, said neighbour is there sat on his ass in the yard crying about something, obviously off his head. "The b£&%$ds" he keeps shouting, pulls out a hand gun and starts firing into the air. Looks up at me on the ladders, stares, puts his hand in his pocket and pulls out bottle of something. Asks if I want a drink, I decline and leg it!
Sold the work very soon after!!
It's all been boring and normal(ish) since!

street full of Asian familys, bicker about the price ,followed me around trying to drop the price, gave grief when collecting ie when did you come we didnt see you,the lazy sod was in bed,had a full street, did them twice then ditched them all, picked wife up after collecting and she wanted to know why i was stressed, only time that has happened

I have to agree Stan - with one noteable exception (sri lankan lady who pays by credit transfer) - all window cleaning dealings I have had with asian folk have been marred by their haggling.

I'm sure it's a culture thing - remember the scene in Life of Brian where they are buying something in a market? It goes something like this:-

John Cleese/Michael Palin: How much?

Seller: 100 duratis

JC/MP: OK

Seller: No! No! You have to haggle with me!

JC/MP: We don't mind, we'll pay the asking price.

Seller (getting excited): No you must haggle!

JC/MP: No, the price is fine.

Seller getting angry: No! No you can't have it you must try to get the price down!!

JC/MP: We're perfectly happy to pay you the full amount.

Seller: You can't have it then, I'm insulted!

JC/MP: Hello insulted, my name is ...

At least that's how I remember the scene.  ;D
It's a game of three halves!
