Hello All,

Ive been cleaning driveways and patios for past couple of years and got asked to clean a customers roof which is something Ive been looking at getting into and have looked at smartseal s training day for roof cleaning but would like some advice from you guys if possible.

I have included a pic of the roof I've been asked to clean it starts just above the garage s not to high off the ground then easily rises 10 metres has 2 windows as seen the one out of view has a flat part of it and fall at the side to just under normal roof height.

I was thinking alluminium tower at the front then roof ladders off of that onto the roof, hav looked at harnesses and vanguard to hold me on and will need a 20 metre hose to easily reach but my question is the 2nd part round the corner I wont able able to reach from the ladder on roof and I wouldnt feel safe putting the tower round the corner as wouldnt fit and a a ladder up the side to a ladder on the roof is very dangerous so Im supposing Its going to need scaffolding with ladder on the roof but Im sure I read on one post on here that you cant work from a ladder only inspect, on a roof.

So would the option be a cherry picker??  How much would one cost for the day and what do you usually charge per job per square metre.

I hope Ive put enough information and look forward to your responses.

yeh my first thought when taking it wasnt of this site lol but I thought any pic was better than no pic and it does show 70% of the roof or there abouts.

hi tom   and that last 30% might be your last    if you get killed    remember a 1% risk is to much for you and yours    if you have a 1% per job  do you stop at 99 if you have a 100 jobs ?

And that is why I have come on here to ask for advice from gentleman with a wealth of experience rather than get straight up a roof and go splat.

I posted a pic of the job in question not a great pic but one all the same, I said I wasn't going straight up the roof, I was asking advice on the right way to do things, scaffolding, towers, harnesses and if I needed a cherry picker also on the rules regarding working from ladders on the rules.

I know you hav a successful business with all the top of the range equipment and know your stuff and hopefully Ill get to where you are, but Im just asking for advice on how to do things right, so any helpful advice would be appreciated, rather than nothing replies.

hi tom i realy hope my answer was not a nothing one it was not ment to be
when i wash roofs   i work with a skilled roofer who finds working with harnesses and lanyards adds to the risk  not lessens it    therefore our customers have to provide to our satifaction a cherry picker and/or scaffolding    this is to keep h&s happy   and only a tracked cherry picker
a 1% risk is small    but if you do 99 jobs ok   do you stop at 100 jobs

 personally i would use a cherrypicker but you will first need to check the ground conditions and any access problems, the reason i say use a cherrypicker is the tiles shown are called marley tiles and they are very fragile if you do decide to use roof ladders then expect to have to replace quite a number of tiles due to breakages, also when cleaning i would try to avoid very high pressure it would be better to apply a chemical then use a low pressure wash off where possible, there may be areas where pressure needs increasing to get a good finish but be carefull when doing so as i said these tiles can be very fragile
