* BURGER ANYONE* ??
« on: February 09, 2011, 03:10:55 pm »
I know this is not the place for mobile burger vans but one of my customers has just given me his burger van. He aquired it in payment for another deal ! Now I'm seriously thinking about combining windows with "BURGER VAN WORLD" does anyone here know anything about running them (other than eating from them) would you say there is more money to be had in them (obviously depending on site location) rather than windows ? I have thought and listened to many negatives and restrictions and so forth. Anyone have any real positives on them ? Know any forums etc ?

One of my mates has a burger van and hes doing very well. Obviously a lot depends on what spot you can pitch up on etc. There is huge profit in food and drinks.
£1 for a cup of tea...how much does a teabag and a splash of milk cost??? I would check out the local B and Q/ playing fields (where there are plenty of football matches and see if they are vacant.
Also there have been reports of "burger wars", where vans have been burnt out, so make sure its mobile!!

could be a bad move,  keeping a burger van you could end up with 2 arses through eating burgers

Keep well away mate.
My brother married into a burger van family and they were always getting into scraps with other burger van owners.

Even on my brothers wedding day he got scrapping over burger vans  ???

We think window cleaners have patches ;)
Why oh Why did he spell my name as bod & not bob on my wedding invites.

What? Some burger van geezers turned up at his wedding and kicked off?? I heard somewhere about icecream van wars. Think it was here in Germany.

i used to have one of them pickwicks potato ovens, some days i would only break even, did it for 6 months before i started window cleaning hard work compared to cleaning windows,as on your days off i was always going shopping for supplies, preparation the night before, getting up early on weekends to get there and set up,dont forget weekends is a must, the ones iv seen never do as well in the week, plus if you get to your pitch and it rains most the day its not like w/c ing where you can go home you would already be out of pocket before you start each day, nowadays you need to buy your pitch off someone, its like anything if its making good money why would anyone give it up for nothing, sorry to be negative but unless you have the perfect pitch dont bother

The above is pretty much what i was told about window cleaning before i started. My wife very nearly didn't let me start because of this.If you want trouble it will find you, if you don't then don't look for it.

The big money is at the shows, but the rent is high, and you need expertise.

You need public liability insurance to get on a council market.

A gap in the market exists if you can find a rural area (a village) and bypass the planning laws by parking on a nearby industial estate and doing home delivery fri sat nights. This is more chinese/pizza/fish and chips not burgers.

To get on a market they often want something different.A noodle bar for instance.

Try and find a pitch for it somewhere on a sunday to start.

slump, what you say is right,im just saying what my experience from it are,i did a couple of shows did really well on one of them as i was the only stall offering a healthier option,i tried loads of markets in a 30 miles radius and not that many were available,i had a mate who started a burger van roughly same time as me struggled find anywhere decent pitch it and did get in the wars, got house windows smashed, has a little nipper aswell so decided to call it a day

Hi Jackal,

I replied before reading your post. I agree with you too. It's tough.I'm a market trader and never done any catering, but i know a few.One market lad i know had a burger van and got sick of it, he joined the army and let his dad take the van on because he hadn't got a job.He did his time in the army, and now does markets for a big supplier and has a very good job.

His Dad? He has ten vans out and became a millionaire.

On a market fish and chips is your best chance for making good money.

I know two lads who do pancakes- sometimes called crepes- they do very well at shows.

i worked the markets for about 12 years and know a burger guy ver well, years ago him and his dad were taking big money on gloucester car boot. wed/sun. five hours grafting and taking about 2k on each trailer,
once the local showmen, fair ground workers saw what was happening they bid the council 100k for the catering rights on the boot sale, so that was the end for my mate,
council run markets are becoming fewer and fewer and privatly run markets want big rents, and if you get sited in a laybe ect even with the correct permits the council can still shut the layby of use it for putting piles of gravel/tarmac and theirs nothing you can do.
hotdog wars was covered by roger cook, have a look and see if you can find it.

I had my own mobile fish and chip van in the 80's which was a good earner if you put the hours in. My father got made redundant so bought this 6 wheeler transit high roof walk through which was already fitted out with stainless steel frying range.
At the time there was a government incentive scheme called "the enterprise allowance scheme which gave us both £40 a week for our first 12 months in business.

i've been interested in this for a few years. My conclusion was getting a pitch at a good event for the weekend (and paying probably 1000s for the privilege) is where the cash appears to be, for a new starter.
