Should i keep the pressure washer?
« on: January 28, 2011, 03:09:59 pm »
My window cleaning round is developing,i recently bought some work and am getting the odd new ones and recommendations. I have a good set up and keeping at a steady pace ought to keep progressing. My flyers and my simple enough website all mention a pressure washing service and i have good experience but no demand as of yet(expected).
I just have a feeling that this type of work will be a distraction from a window cleaning round and in my mind a good steady round of decent well-priced work is the holy grail.
My pressure washing gear is new or as new and top quality and specification. I`m thinking if i get pressure washing work my equipment becomes used and abused, loses its current value and i take my eye off the ball with the windows and time spent pressure washing is less time building the window round.
So i think i am posting to see if anyone has been in this situation and maybe experience has taught them to do one or the other and not both. I can imagine a scenario where i could get a good run on pressure washing and take decent money but then enter another autumn/winter without a full or even half full window round, see income fall away, become disenchanted and pack up altogether. I have a relative in Ireland that does both and most of the window cleaning customers are irregular and of course the pressure washing certainly is so there is no core business being established, nothing with a value to sell on or a guaranteed(or nearly guaranteed) income. However i might well be glad of a paid distraction from the window cleaning, any replies advice or someones related experience would be gladly welcomed.

if you are in a good area and you do a good job you will be soon booked solid and no time for anything else ,put all your energy into your  window round

i'm thinking the same as you at the moment, i do have near enough a full round that i have built up over the last 8 years plus i brought some very compact high paying propertys last year and is still getting bigger and not sure if i should just focus on that as i also advertise pressure washing and gutter cleaning but really leaning towards the side of stopping all that kind of work including upvc cleaning too and just focus all my efforts on the window cleaning keeping it nice and simple, allot of it is mainly not being bothered to do the work when window cleaning is allot less hassle and doesn't earn that much less (sometimes the same) then carrying out other types of work, the only thing that does stop me is if say you do £300 worth of window cleaning the money comes in £10, £15, £20 etc as when doing say £300 pressure washing job you then get a nice little lump sum in one go plus in summer there is allot more time to be able to do both plus its nice sometimes to have a break from the window cleaning.

If I were you I would keep the equipment. If you sell it now you will be lucky to get back half what you paid for it. If you win some decent pressure washing jobs, have a fixed price per metre so it makes sense financially and pay someone a decent cut to do the work. e.g. you have a job of 150 square metres at £3 per sq metre, pay someone you trust to do a good job and split it 50/50. You provide the equipment and he does the graft.
You don't take time away from the windows side but still get a return on your gear.

Same situation as you...........my rounds growing and I am putting my efforts into building it further. I have a 2k pressure washer in the garage that hasn't been used for a while BUT I am trying to go with the thought that as soon as spring/summer comes I will get bookings and just do pressure washing on Saturdays for a little earner.

Or train someone to use it and give them a % of each job and just take the bookings?

Brand new Spit Water Australia Honda 13hp, Toothed Belt Driven Interpump WS251,250 BAR, 15 litrs/min
Diesel Hotbox up to 21 litres/min(dont own this but its currently available as and when required)
Mosmatic 21"FSC.
Extending Lance,swivel nozzle,turbo nozzles etc
Very smart and ample sized single axle trailer recently restored and refurbed by me.
Its all ready to rumble and mad as i am i have my eye out for a smaller Honda GX200 gearbox driven washer for gutter/facia work though the extending lance with the swivel and vario nozzle tames the overkill of the 13hp for this type of work.
Apart from nozzles, connectors etc none of my gear came through a retailer and quite possibly i would not lose any money if i sold it with the purchaser still getting great value.

I`m thinking if i used the money from the sale of this gear to buy further window cleaning work then i would be getting a return on the money straight away and then have a non depreciating or more likely appreciating asset. And perhaps i should act now whilst all this kit is in perfect condition
