Not sure what you mean (Ladders 1 to 4) do you mean the angle?
If you are asking what angle to have your pole at while working it will vary.
Although when possible stand well back when doing upstairs windows and it will be easier on your neck muscles.  ;)
Sometimes you will have to have the pole almost vertical.
One of my jobs I have to get sandwiched between the house and a motorhome to try to clean the upstairs bathroom window  :(

as wfpoling work goes dont think there is a ratio as to speak so the push and drag on the pole is of comfort to you doing a job to narrow you will be pulling things and to wide a stance you will be over doing the exertion

I'd say 3-1 or 2-1 if you've got room.
