Ready!.........steady!.....................
« on: January 20, 2011, 08:00:52 pm »
Hi guys and girls, First post so be kind!

I will shortly be starting my window cleaning business, just waiting on my licence arriving from local council.(strange this only applies in scotland?) going trad to begin with and have been practising on my friends and families houses like mad with some very basic kit i bought.

going to invest in some decent kit and was just wondering where's the best place to buy a complete start up kit (or should i buy it individually and if so what would you recommend? )

Cheers in advance!

steve

i use the windowclean centre as well.you ll find everything ya need to start up as a traditional window cleaner.heres what i would recommend.

14in unger ergotech squeegee and unger soft replacement rubbers/T MOP with monsoon sleeve/unger classic bucket on a belt

unger green oblong bucket

squeegee off or gg3 window cleaning detergent

ettore black pouch/4 in ergotech unger scraper and replacement blades

unger pre washed grade A SCRIM(10)

large blue flatweave microfibres(10)

3.5m TRADE 2 SECTION LADDER

8FT SINGLE POINTER LADDER

this will get you started.i would also recommend you get an extension pole for awkward windows.

unger 3 section teleplus pole/fixiclamp/angle adaptor.

hope this helps

regards

I would dito Daz list.I would go insrtead of a double latter I would get a  triple combo
ladder which will reach most gutters and you can do gutter cleaning as well. and add a 5/6 " squeegee for small windows. The lite/ weight combo ladders  are very stable due to a cross footing the will spread your weight over a metre wide base foot.

cheers for all the replies! had a look at window clean centre and looks good! prices seem very resonable aswell!

Dave- thanks for the offer but already have triple ladders, combo and step ladders, and even ropes/harness from previous employment!lol.(although that prob wont be required)

Once my local council pull their fingers out and get me my licence ill get the gear ordered up, then its canvassing, canvassing and oh maybe some canvassing!

try soap national as well for trad gear, good prices, cheap delivery, and you always get it next day if you order early enough.

where you based steve good to have more scots on here ;) it says highlands on your profile and that usually means rip off delivery charges from suppliers.

;D ;D ;D

hope you are planning on working in the rain, last time I was in skye it was constant forever it just never stopped,

anyway list of kit wise pretty much what Dazmond suggested.

Do royal mail charge extra? it could be worth getting someone to post by standard post

You dont have to wait to get your licence as long as you have applied, you can start straight away, mine took 3 month to come through its a waste of money anyways you will never get asked to show it.

well next time u visit can u leave the rain in the central belt  ;)

RM dont charge extra but not all suppliers will use them.

just a money making exercise by the look of it! i was going to phone them and ask if i can start, or should i just start regardless?, dont see an issue with my application as ive paid the money, got PLI and even sent em a copy of my disclosure for good measure so just a formality really!

That is something you can only answer, legally you should not start until the license is granted, will anyone even know it exists? I doubt it nobody knows here. are there many council enforcement officers running around Skye? probably not, I have had my license checked twice though. but would I risk it yes I would. I will get in trouble now as I am a member of the SLWCN and they would advise to wait to keep strictly within the law.

Oh and did I start before my license was granted? yes bugger waiting for the council to get a grip.

just had a thought , what would happen if an application was turned down after the applicant had purchased PLI (which normally comes with a 14 day cooling off period) resulting in the applicant £100+ down?

i was told to provide a PLI cert with application, surely it would be better for police checks ect to be carried before PLI cert is requested?

But i suppose the councils dont care about that!

Never see enforcement officers up here but you cant fart on this island without everyone knowing about it! lol

The only reason it would be turned down is for criminal convictions. as long as they ok it will be granted.

Hey Steve,

Get a wfp system asap that way you can still be out cleaning in light to moderate rain...maybe a trolley system or backpack at first...

should think that may be best option weather wise
