yes I had an ad in the yeallow pages in 2 different counties for a whole year

result ..............................      1 call all year

yeallow pages was great up to about 5 years ago when it started when other forms of advertising were more profitable.

yellow pages has had its day and now google is the place where most people look for trades.

i had a call the other day from yellow pages saying there no longer offering free listings and its gonna be pay only because they wanted to make the book smaller to fit through peoples letter boxes

my reply was more like the book is small because no one wants to advertise in it because its a waste of money

1st year i paid £34 a month current year im paying £28 a month.

just paid my last payment  :D  no more money wasting

all i ever got was one contract (a good one tho, £170 first clean for windows and gutters - then after that i get £65 one month £35 the other as they have insides every other)

im slightly on profit tho but ill leave now.

yell is dying, there are more and more marketing companys even the ones that tell you that they will improve your google rating. when i tell them 9/10 times i come near top the lie and telll me i dont , some are truthful and say oh yeah well done.  if you and your top competitors all signed up to have their website more visable there no gain there as you still be in the same boat.

i think a website is the best way these days and good metatags, if you go on competitors websites claing the page tab on the tool bar and veiw source you can see the keywords they use for metatags.

I pay about £40 a month, have had a few jobs from it but won't be renewing when it expires. The results haven't justified the cost.

I did pick up a few decent jobs via yell and yell.com.  It was worth it - just about.  I don't have a paid ad now though.
The trouble is that if it's a normal domestic job, people are usually going down a list for the cheapest.  I'm not interested in being the cheapest.  Same with commercial too.  However, with commercial, it can still be possible to be the cheapest and earn OK if it's bulk work.

Not my experience but copied from a blog:

"Does anybody use yellow pages or yell.com.  I had a yell.com ad a few years back when I used to do drain jetting so one day i thought i would give it a try so i phoned yell and said I had a blocked drain in sidmouth which is my home town I was given a phone number of a company in bridgewater about 40 miles away and when I said hang on why wasn't i given a more local company like me and i was told that the listing is done on a rota basis so regarding yell i think it is like a lottery unless they have made changes to improve the way companies are listed.  As for yellow pages never worked for me and the costs were high although the rep was rather fit, thompson now that was better and a fraction of the cost.... I have the free listing at yell.com and have already had a window cleaning and gutter clearance job from it, I would never pay for it. I have also free listings with thomson local and gumtree which have also brought jobs my way.  ;D

my opinion is that if i see a big flashy ad,then underneath it i see the one- liner also rans ,i read through the also rans  and choose one of those (as more likely a 1 man band )

i only have the free 1 liner and have raked in about 3 regular jobs in a year  but almost bet the big paying ad  doesnt rake in much more and mine being free were all profit

years ago when i was a kid i was almost conned by a smart yellow pages salesman into spending a real fortune and i had a hell of a time cancelling ,felt sick to the bottom of my stomach i will always remember ,it left me wary of advertising sellers,

i now brush them off and if you tell them you are snowed under with work its suprising how quickly they back off .

There contacted me last year and promised me the world, the main heavy weight sponsored  listing, video on listing  and lots more in all areas.

Told me I could have the listing for half price special offer approx £750 for the year, got emails from them stating all the prices, so I signed up for it.

When they sent all details through the post price was £1800, phoned them and could not get through to the girl I was dealing with, they told me she was on holiday for 2 weeks. Told them all the details I was given and they just told me thats wrong I  would have to pay the £1800.

Anyway got through to area manager on phone, he was ok he got listing cancelled, 2 days later the 1st girl I was dealing with phoned to ask why i cancelled, told her the problem ( even though they told me she was on holiday with 12 days still left )  she just told me the final pricing was not up to her, why give me a price in the 1st place.

All I got from them was lie after lie, then for about 3 months after this they would phone me at least once a week asking me to advertise with them.

Really not impressed with them.
