« on: December 09, 2010, 05:29:21 pm »
I know we need to get out and earn, but ive had 3 now cancel after paying me. Well leave it till March/April, we'll call you ones.

I went to an office to collect from the managing director who's house I do.
"How much?"
£75 please
"what you've just cleaned it?"
Yep
"this weather? You're bloody mad!"
I've got to work.

Sun was shining and it was above freezing. What do they think we do - hibernate or go on the dole all winter?

I had similar this morning; one guy said it was 'pointless doing them in this weather'.

I explained to him that I have windows in my house, I know how they react to what sort of weather, and that if he didn't want a regular window cleaner, I'd remove him from my list.

He replied, "Do what you want to do!"

I thanked him for his custom and cracked on cleaning his neighbour's house.  He came out ten minutes later, asked me to clean his windows and paid me.  I told him that I didn't want to sound harsh, but I only clean regular customers windows; I've too much work to mess about.

I suspect he realised it's going to be more trouble for him to find a new window cleaner than it is for me to find a new customer.

I only keep reliable customers; I don't like 'not this time', and because I ALWAYS have dropped these, it's rare any customer of mine says, 'Not this time' without a good reason.  I think he may have been my first this year.

Same here. I drop them there and then.
Some get a second chance if I like them, but otherwise...bye bye.

Its always harsh when established customers cancel but i guess we just need to forget and move on, if they call you again i would just explain how it works the fact that all your bills are regular and the fact that you need to eat on a regular basis means you are only looking for regular work :)

I tell them that if I charged as much as some other window cleaners, I would take 4 months off in winter and go to Bali.
That usually shuts them up.

funnily enough I felt a right desperate window cleaner today and received loads of sarcastic comments, but then I am desperate so they will have to lump it. don't blame them really as I was trudging through 2 foot of snow to get to there windows ::)

We all gotta pay the bills so don't worry about anything as long as we get paid. Coming round to thinking if you only do residential work then you will have to constantly canvass at certain times of the year to keep the revenue up.

I adopt the attitude that my customers love to have their windows cleaned before Christmas, whether they like it or not.

Last year on the run up to Christmas, it was strange in that I was severely hampered by a lot of inside cleans (which I don't mind since I work with Wor Lass, and they're ideal for me to crack on outside while she does the inside).  People like to have their property looking nice at this time of year.

I've had three customers make me 'promise' to get to them prior to Christmas, so the place looks nice for visitors; so I'll make sure I get these.

It's January and February where I feel like I'm not wanted by some!  >:(

But stuff them, we've agreed terms and conditions.  If at the point of quoting they started saying stuff like, "Well, I wouldn't want you to clean in certain months", I just wouldn't take them on as customers in the first place.

My ex-wife was a child-minder, and she was pretty ruthless.  She charged a RETAINING FEE whether she looked after your kid or not.  So - for example - if you were going on holiday for three weeks and she wouldn't be child minding your kid, she'd still charge you for RETAINING HER as your childminder; otherwise she'd just fill the space with another kid.

I don't see much of a difference.
