Isit legal to trade under more than 1 name?

it is not illegal to use different names ie  bobs windows, bobs guttering,  etc  the problems come when u start getting to vat level and if vat man feels that they are to close a business then u might have problems and have to vat reg the lot,  u might have to fill in loads of tax returns for each company depending if ur a ltd or sole trader,  ur account can do this

My company is called G & S Souter Ltd

We trade under the name Souter Window Cleaning (for cleaning windows obviously).

This is common practice.

You can trade ubder as many different names as you want, but if your a sole trader for tax purpopses they all get lumped together unless ones sole trader, ones a partnership not doing the smae businees. They need to be seperate business entities.
As a limited company you can have as many as you like

I know alot of LTD companies do this but why? whats the advantage of having

Jo blogs  LTD trading asSsuch & Such window cleaners? why would you not just have such & such window cleaners LTD in the first place?

By law you must put your company details on all correspondence with customers and suppliers.

If you wanted to branch out into other areas it would be difficult to keep credibility if for example you had to put on a quote:

Jo Bloggs window cleaners trading as  Jo Bloggs Engineering.
