Hello All,

Tomorrow I am going to do a test with IPA to see how flammable it really is when diluted with water at various rates see below for dilution rates;

75% water to 25% IPA
50% water to 50% IPA
25% water to 75% IPA

I am going to mix each solution in a bucket and then put a lighted match to it each time, to see what happens, and before I get any wisecracks no I am not going to be looking directly above the bucket.  I definately do not want to take the risk of burning my eyebrows off!

Hopefully this will alleviate any worries for some people who go on about using it in their WFP systems.

why bother the dilution rates for it actually to work at freezing conditions is uneconomical

I think the problem is, Dave a lot of people just don't seem to believe that when used in the water fed pole window cleaning industry that it is too watered down to be combustable.

So I am hoping this should help with some people who have any fears of using it whilst working in the cold.

These alcohol's are great in enclosed systems but once into the open air..they evaporate thus making them absolutely no good as a de-icer for actual wfp work and as also mentioned the % rates required for de-icing can be very high...personally I have access to large qty's of methanol (biodiesel production) and ran loads of tests about 3 years ago using various alcohols and as you would expect all results followed what should happen according to physics.

So this is why I say no point trying to re-invent the wheel...the results are all available...

I'm just waiting for someone with the 'confidence' to test their coke-can full of ipa into a 500l tank theory....

First of all. who is Bungalow Bill?

I haven't had time to do the test yet, ended up doing some other work instead.

However I do think a test of how flammable IPA is when mixed with water at any dillution rate.  I just thought it might help other people out who may want to try it in their systems, that's all.

Did not expect any wisecracks though???

Tested all the above percentages, and guess what not once did it light up in flames.
