Van issue
« on: November 10, 2010, 05:23:38 pm »
I'm just starting within the w/cleaning and c/cleaning and until now used a 4x4 for my work but now I need to get a van for all that gear. The issue that I've got is - either get a smaller van which means saving money and squeeze all the gear inside and the poles on roof or get a bigger one and dump it all inside along with the poles but that would cost me more.
And its not only the cost of the van but also the insurance, fuel, etc that I need to keep in mind.
The only thing that I'm not convinced is to drive around with the poles on the roof - what happens if I leave the car unattended on the street or even under my flat (I have a parking space under my flat) ? Will the poles get nicked?
How do you guys go around that?
The things that I need to squeeze in the van are:
400 litre flat tank (I suppose I could exchange it for an upright one)
+ Resin bottle, battery, reel, 2.4 m pole
Alltec Aqua 40 carpet cleaning machine
+ some bits and bobs

I like the size and looks of the Transit Connect but dont know if I'll fit it all in???

Thanks
Chris

Buy some proper poles with sensible collapsed lengths and they will fit in most vans easily.

My budget is almost depleted and all I've got left for the van is either around £1k cash or some kind of finance but being a new business I dont think I could get one.

I will be getting a new pole for the backpack, probably one of the gardiner ones and they are 5'/6' collapsed. But the issue isnt just the poles but squeezing all the gear inside the van.

I've seen many guys in my area store their poles on the roof even in big cars like Transits. Why ???

I see you're in Edinburgh?

I have a pole carrier (fits to roof bars) with fitting kit. It has a lock on the opening end. It's 6 years old but never actually been fitted or used!!

I'm in the borders (berwickshire) if you want to come for it, you can have it for free! ;)

It's with my brother in law (he never used it either) so I must check with him first just to make sure he's still got it but I'm 95% sure he has. ;)

So, anyone has a clue if I'll fit all that gear in the Connect?

When you come down you can look at my doblo (similar size) with 400ltr flat tank & DI's/ reel/ pole etc. & see for yourself. I don't know how big carpet machines are.
