Always have change in the palm of you're hand:
Knock the door for payment and then start to pack you're stuff away, while they got to fetch the cash/cheque book carry on  packing up ;)

Sometimes I have to take say a ladder or other equipment to the back of a property and then go back for the hose etc....when walking back to the van...count your steps then you have a rough idea of how much hose to 'pull' out of the van.
