Cleaning Very Old Brass
« on: November 01, 2010, 02:17:03 pm »
Hi all
I have been asked by a customer to clean up some old brass on a shop front door and window sill. I have tried brasso which has improved it but the shop next door (who cleans his brass every day) has bright lovely brass  and it really shows up the shop I am working on. I have had viakal suggested to me but I am worried about the effect it would have. Can I use wire wool or will this damage the surface? The brass has not been cleaned for about 20 years! I would go and try a few different products but the job is 3 hours away and I want to take as many options as I can!
Many thanks
Tim

Brass can be rubbed with extra-fine steel wool or Very fine emery cloth will give quicker results.

Rub only in one direction and not in a circular method.

If it is non lacquered brass tarnishes when exposed to air. A weekly wiping with a little liquid ammonia on a soft cloth will help keep unlacquered brass shiny

Olive Oil. Brass will look brighter and require less polishing if rubbed with a cloth moistened with olive oil after each polishing. Olive oil retards tarnish

True brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. It tends to oxidize (tarnish) quickly when exposed to air

Hope this is of some help
